Charles Handy, writer, social philosopher, and management theorist, passed away at his home in London this past Friday. He was 92. Charles was a former Distinguished Drucker Scholar for The Drucker Institute and Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate University. In the winter of 2008, Charles and his wife, Elizabeth, a renowned photographer, were very generous with their time at CGU, teaching, gathering regularly with students and faculty, and participating in several broader community activities arranged by the Institute. Charles subsequently donated his original correspondence, articles, manuscripts, and other documents on management to The Drucker Institute. Elizabeth also donated her photographs of Charles to the collection. Warren Bennis, a peer, said in 2014, “If Peter Drucker is responsible for legitimizing the field of management and Tom Peters for popularizing it, then Charles Handy should be known as the person who gave it a philosophical elegance and eloquence that was missing from the field." Thanks to Charles, the Drucker Institute at CGU is home to nearly a century of research from the Father of “Modern Management,” Peter F. Drucker, and the other leading authorities on the Practice of Management – Tom Peters and Charles. We will find some great highlights from the archives to post in the next few weeks and encourage you to explore Charles' work at the Drucker Institute's archives and find ways to turn his bold ideas and words into action. In 1942, Peter F. Drucker asked in The Future of Industrial Man: What is a Functioning Society? The start of his answer... Man in his social and political existence must have a functioning society just as he must have air to breathe in his biological existence. However, the fact that man has to have a society does not necessarily mean that he has it. Nobody calls the mass of unorganized, panicky, stampeding humanity in a shipwreck a “society.” There is no society, though there are human beings in a group. Actually, the panic is directly due to the breakdown of a society; and the only way to overcome it is by restoring a society with social values, social discipline, social power, and social organization... For the individual, there is no society unless he has social status and function. Society is only meaningful if its purpose, its aims, its ideas and ideals make sense in terms of the individual’s purposes, aims, ideas and ideals. There must be a definite functional relationship between individual life and group life.
