🗓️ This week, the European Parliament is holding its European Gender Equality Week, giving all committees and delegations an opportunity to explore issues relevant to gender equality in their particular areas of competence. Gender equality is a core value of the EU. The Union has committed to 'gender mainstreaming', meaning that, in principle, all EU policies must take both women's and men's perspectives into consideration. The Brussels Binder is no longer just a network, we are a movement. A movement that understands the power of #diverse voices, #intersectionality, and collaborative action. Since the Brussels Binder was launched in 2017, there has been an increasing awareness of gender equality in panel discussions. But will it stay this way? Across Europe and beyond, we see an incremental and steady advance of far-right, nationalist and 'anti-woke' voices that challenge diversity and inclusion. In some Member States, we are already witnessing a decrease of attention for the rights of women and minorities at national level. Will this also extend to the return of the all-white, all-male panel in Brussels? One thing is certain: we cannot take achievements from the past for granted! #endmanels

How can we address unconscious bias in leadership and management? Earlier today, Brussels Binder board member Tamara Makoni participated in the final conference of Beyunbi, a project zooming in on this issue.   In her intervention, Tamara highlighted two common biases in the workplace: the affinity bias (a good feeling about someone because you share similarities) and the proximity bias (having a more positive views of team members you see often).   She also shared advice on how to make these biases more explicit for yourself and how to become aware of the shortcuts in your brain. For example:   -      check how much you actually know about this person; -      challenge yourself by asking a trusted peer for their opinion; -      be curious to learn about people and cultures that are different from you.   Outcomes of the Beyond Unconscious Bias project include a survey-based study carried out among managers and leaders across the EU, and a pilot training for managers and leaders that is linked to the project.
