Sarah Bird, BS ’07, began working with artificial intelligence years before most of us started realizing it was AI that was finishing the sentences we started writing in an email and enabling our phones to use facial recognition. Now AI is virtually everywhere. Bird has been the chief product officer of responsible AI at Microsoft for the past five years. As Wired magazine put it in June 2023, Bird is one of the foremost “humans trying to keep us safe from AI,” by working to mitigate risk factors and malicious use. Learn more about Bird and her work in the Alcalde.

Earlier this year, the Texas Women’s Basketball team advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the third time in four seasons, adding another accolade to their impressive record. More than a hundred years prior, however, pioneering female basketball players were carving out some history of their own. Basketball first came to the Forty Acres in 1899. Beginning in physical education classes and then developing into organized team sport, the women played their first games in a library-turned-gymnasium in the former Main Building, years before the men's team formed. David Griffin, BS ’20, has created a unique community on and off campus, fostering champions and scholars from many slices of UT life. The seven-time Under-25 National Champions University of Texas Weightlifting Team is a first-of-its-kind college program, outperforming scholarship-offering competitor schools under the guidance of Griffin, its singular founder. “Hot Science — Cool Talks,” is a free, monthly lecture series that opens up the science on the Forty Acres to a public audience. After 25 years, founder Jay Banner is now working to boil down the essence of the “Hot Science” experience—the scientific wonder and the personal connection—into a new television series with the help of some experts on show biz.
