Sarah Bird, BS ’07, began working with artificial intelligence years before most of us started realizing it was AI that was finishing the sentences we started writing in an email and enabling our phones to use facial recognition. Now AI is virtually everywhere. Bird has been the chief product officer of responsible AI at Microsoft for the past five years. As Wired magazine put it in June 2023, Bird is one of the foremost “humans trying to keep us safe from AI,” by working to mitigate risk factors and malicious use. Earlier this year, the Texas Women’s Basketball team advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the third time in four seasons, adding another accolade to their impressive record. More than a hundred years prior, however, pioneering female basketball players were carving out some history of their own. Basketball first came to the Forty Acres in 1899. Beginning in physical education classes and then developing into organized team sport, the women played their first games in a library-turned-gymnasium in the former Main Building, years before the men's team formed. Learn more about the sport's history in the Alcalde.
