The Invisible Costs of AWS's Strict RTO Policy: A Setback for Women in Tech The debate around return-to-office (RTO) policies has intensified as companies navigate the post-pandemic landscape. Strict RTO policies can pose a significant setback for many women in the workforce. At AWS, concerns about the culture and leadership practices exacerbating these challenges have been raised. Reports from employees suggest that, under the leadership of AWS unit CEO Matt Garman, these policies are not only making it difficult for women to thrive but may also be driving a deeper cultural problem beyond workplace flexibility. It's well-known that women, who are often primary caregivers or manage a disproportionate share of household responsibilities, have benefitted significantly from flexible work arrangements. According to a McKinsey report, 77% of women cited flexible work policies as essential, compared to 67% of men. The ability to work remotely has helped to narrow the gap in professional opportunities, but strict RTO policies threaten to widen it again. The consequences are not merely anecdotal; studies have shown that rigid RTO requirements can lead to higher attrition rates among women, undermining years of progress toward workplace equality. Amid these industry-wide trends, AWS unit CEO Matt Garman has doubled down on the strict RTO policy, drawing scrutiny. Some employees have raised concerns about Garman's leadership style, describing him as a micromanager. There are claims that his firm stance on the RTO policy may reinforce a culture of micromanagement and indirectly push out the few female employees in AWS's tech-heavy divisions.
