Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD)
Financial Services
Enabling better nature-related risk management, corporate reporting and capital allocation.
About us
The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) has developed a set of disclosure recommendations and guidance that encourage and enable business and finance to assess, report and act on their nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities. The recommendations and guidance will enable businesses and finance to integrate nature into decision making. Our aim is to support a shift in global financial flows away from nature-negative outcomes and toward nature-positive outcomes, aligned with the Global Biodiversity Framework. Launched in 2021, TNFD released the first beta versions its framework for consultation and feedback between March 2022 and March 2024. Over the two-year design and development phase leading to the publication of the TNFD recommendations in September 2023, it received feedback from over 60 countries. Over 200 pilot tests of a prototype framework were conducted by business and financial institutions around the world across sectors, geographies and biomes. TNFD published its final recommendation in September 2023.

New case study launch: Nature-related dependencies in food supply chains 🍓 Following the launch of the TNFD German Consultation Group in Berlin earlier this week, we are pleased to release a new case study highlighting risks materialising from nature-related dependencies and their impact on German businesses: “Red Gold: Spanish strawberries and German supermarkets”. Supermarkets are under growing pressure to meet consumer demand for year-round access to fresh fruit and vegetables, even when these products are out of season locally. This global demand often comes with environmental strain for the regions in which they are produced. A compelling example is out-of-season strawberries in Northern Europe. German and Swiss supermarkets source these primarily from the Huelva Province in southern Spain, known for its early-growing season and as one of Europe’s largest strawberry producers. Intensive farming practices in the region have led to the overuse of resources like water, including illegal wells, threatening local ecosystems and the long-term resilience of strawberry production. Huelva adjoins the Doñana National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and biodiversity hotspot. Water depletion from berry farming has put the park at risk, sparking widespread concern from organisations like WWF. In 2023, German NGO Campact e.V. launched a campaign urging supermarkets and consumers to boycott Spanish strawberries over their environmental impacts. This created a ripple effect across the value chain, forcing German and Swiss supermarkets to confront nature-related risks in their supply chain. Our case study dives into this issue, examining: ◾ The impacts of the boycott on supermarkets in Germany and Switzerland ◾ How these retailers responded to reputational and financial risks ◾ The lessons for managing dependencies and impacts on nature This case study highlights the urgent need for companies to address nature-related issues. Failing to do so isn’t just a risk to nature; it’s a risk to their business. Read the full case study in the case study library on the TNFD Knowledge Hub. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d8Kqj2UT This case study collection includes real-world, practical examples of how organisations are assessing, managing and disclosing their nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities. Each case study highlights the importance of understanding and acting on nature-related impacts. 📤 Submit your case study to the library: 🔗 https://ow.ly/2jaz50UfUqE #TNFD #NaturePositive #Sustainability #KnowledgeHub #CorporateReporting
