Did you know the term “Absorptive Capacity” was coined by our late Fellow (and US National Security Advisor) Walt Rostow in 1957? The term meant a nation’s ability to support and use an externally sourced technology, and measuring it helped America make foreign aid decisions. These days, the term is applied in business, to mean a firm’s ability to utilize a procured technology. A most important idea! Walt Whitman Rostow (1916–2003) was an American economist, professor and political theorist who served as National Security Advisor to President of the United States Lyndon B. Johnson from 1966 to 1969. Rostow worked in the Office of Strategic Services during World War II and later was a foreign policy adviser and speechwriter for presidential candidate and then President John F. Kennedy. Prominent for his role in the shaping of US foreign policy in Southeast Asia during the 1960s, Rostow is known for his book The Stages of Economic Growth: A Non-Communist Manifesto (1960). Rostow's theories were embraced by many officials in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. Prominent as whistleblower @Daniel Ellsberg’s antagonist in the movie Hearts and Minds, Walt mellowed in his later years. Rostow received the Order of the British Empire (1945), the Legion of Merit (1945), and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1969). https://lnkd.in/g4iVtJva

Thrilled to say that the Tahoe Music Alive 2024 Series delivered exceptional classical and jazz chamber music to over a thousand attendees in North Tahoe. With a lineup of distinguished musicians and outstanding venues, the performances received excellent feedback, showcasing the community's appreciation for high-quality music. As we prepare for the 2025 season, we invite supporters to join us in making extraordinary musical experiences possible. A few highlights in the December newsletter.

The press is making much of the gender gap in the US election, and how many US women have embraced the "4B movement." To understand the roots of these current events, see TANDO Institute's White Paper "Autocracy and Gender Politics: South Korea as Bellwether," https://lnkd.in/gpzQTBtR #gender #4B #politics

https://lnkd.in/gJguJFP8. Our graduates extend kudos to TANDO Fellow David Gibson and to our founder @George Kozmetsky.
Executive, researcher, practitioner in inquiry learning. STEM education, entrepreneurship, regional development.
Much of what I learned about technology and regional economic development traces back to my UT Austin MSTC (Masters in Tech Commercialization) professor, and then mentor at the IC2 Institute, Dr. David Gibson. For the academics and policymakers out there--much to be learned about how technology, innovation, knowledge transfer and professional networks make a whole far more than the sum of the parts. Dr. Dave, you did that for me...thank you! His latest work: https://lnkd.in/gWnVWK3A
