A New $100M AI-Powered Opportunity in Semiconductor R&D 🌍🔋🔬
The U.S. Department of Commerce recently unveiled plans for a $100 million competition for sustainable semiconductor R&D. The initiative focuses on university-led, industry-supported collaborations using AI-driven Autonomous Experimentation (AI/AE) to advance eco-friendly semiconductor production.
Here’s a breakdown of the initiative’s goals:
1) Fast-Tracking Sustainable Semiconductor Research: This competition will encourage research teams to apply AI/AE to accelerate the discovery of environmentally-friendly materials and processes with practical applications in semiconductor manufacturing.
2) Incorporating Sustainability Metrics: Competition proposals will prioritize sustainability targets, including enhanced water and energy efficiency, waste reduction, and PFAS mitigation, alongside traditional performance metrics like power, cost, and area.
3) Strengthening Emerging Research Institutions: By promoting partnerships across universities, industry, government labs, and other stakeholders, this funding will empower emerging research institutions, expanding the U.S. semiconductor R&D ecosystem.
4) Developing a Skilled Workforce: This project aims to cultivate a new generation of researchers with AI/AE expertise, building a talent pipeline of graduates and faculty equipped with the skills essential for sustainable semiconductor innovation.
Application Process: The competition will require a concept paper followed by a full application for selected invitees. The full Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) will be posted on Grants.gov by the end of 2024, with concept papers due approximately 60 days after publication.
