Earlier this week, we wrapped up the year with an incredible Swimming with Allocators lunch (sponsored by Brex) —a chance to bring together some of the sharpest minds in the venture and allocator world for a thoughtful conversation. We dove into pressing topics like what more consolidation in the RIA sector could mean for emerging managers and allocators alike. One of the standout predictions for 2025? We’re likely to see even more spinouts as mid-career allocators and GPs carve out their own paths. It was also great to reconnect with a few attendees who have been featured on the podcast this year—each of whom brought fresh perspectives to the table. If you’ve missed any of our episodes, it’s the perfect time to catch up. Swimming with Allocators dives deep into the allocator ecosystem, exploring trends, challenges, and what’s next for venture capital. Check them out (see links in the comments), and here’s to an exciting 2025 ahead!

Often, the biggest risk is doing nothing while the world changes around us.” “Seeing how a small investment and a little belief can completely transform someone's life changed the way I see the world.” “The water is fine! There’s no need to fear impact investing—plenty of us can help you find your way.” 🌱 Bob’s work reminds us that mission-aligned investing doesn’t have to sacrifice returns—it makes them stronger. 🎧 Listen to the full episode here:  Apple: https://lnkd.in/gAeGbghc Spotify: https://lnkd.in/gfhxnnRv YouTube: https://lnkd.in/grARvW3r Alexa Binns Earnest Sweat

  • Thank you to the GPFO team for sharing what Family Offices are looking for today in Co-Investment from venture funds. Expertise. Diligence. More helpful findings from their latest report discussed in Episode 50.

  • Our co-host Earnest Sweat believes we are seeing a shift in venture, with founders choosing "teams" similar to how younger sports fans pick their favorite team based on the player, not the team.

Ask anyone in my family or any of my friends—I speak in sports analogies. And as we wrapped up Season 2 of Swimming with Allocators, I couldn’t resist using one to describe a big shift I’m seeing in venture capital. Here’s the take: “The fandom of founders is changing. It’s more about the individual than the brand. Founders now seek partners who resonate with them personally, not just the firm’s name.” This feels like the shift in professional sports from fans supporting teams to rallying around individual players. Founders are no longer just looking at the brand of the VC firm; they’re evaluating the person behind the check—their approach, values, and ability to genuinely add value. Alexa Binns and I dove deep into this dynamic (and much more) in the 50th episode of Swimming with Allocators, our last episode for 2024. We discussed co-investments, allocator trends, our predictions for 2025, and even our favorite reads to close out the year. 🎧 Check out the full episode now! Whether you're an allocator, a GP, or just curious about what’s shaping venture in the year ahead, this one’s for you. Let me know what you think in the comments!

LPs are increasingly drawn to co-investments, but are allocators truly equipped to play the venture game effectively? In the last episode of 2024, Swimming with Allocators, Alexa Binns and I dive into the rise of co-investments in venture deals as a strategy among LPs—family offices, endowments, and institutional players alike. While the appeal of lower fees and direct access to high-potential deals is clear, it raises important questions: - Can allocators juggle co-investing with their already complex full-time roles? - Are they equipped to identify, diligence, and add value like a seasoned GP? - And ultimately, does this approach help or hinder emerging managers trying to build durable funds? We explore the challenges, opportunities, and what it takes for both LPs and GPs to make co-investing work. In this clip, I share a half-baked idea of a "Finder's Fund"—a structure where emerging GPs can fill the white space in LPs' desire for more co-investing opportunities while also giving experienced GPs a chance to build additional track records and attribution. The conversation is live now—don’t miss it!

RIAs were supposed to democratize access to the best investment opportunities. But now, with PE firms rolling them up and buying OCIOs, are we actually consolidating power instead of expanding it? As Alexa Binns and I wrap up Season 2 of Swimming with Allocators with EPISODE 50 (🤯), we explore how the consolidation of RIAs and OCIOs is changing the landscape for emerging managers and capital allocation. We also dive into bold predictions for 2025, from AI's next wave of innovation to why diverse managers and crypto whales might dominate the year ahead. This one’s packed with insights, reflections, and debates you won’t want to miss. Stay tuned for the full episode dropping tomorrow!

Ten years ago, I was entering venture capital, thinking it was all about check sizes and deals. Today, I’ve realized it’s more about people and relationships. The mistakes? Not spending enough time building those relationships. But those lessons helped me become the connector I am today. What’s one thing you’ve learned over the past decade that changed the way you do business?
