Last Friday night, during the ICS conference dinner… we had the opportunity to delve into Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), a cutting-edge approach combining Large Language Models (LLMs) with curated data sources. Pekka Abrahamsson’s team at GPT-Lab in Tampere showcased their innovative prototype designed to deliver trustworthy answers in specific domains. Attendees tested the tool with typical questions, and while its ability to cite sources and provide relevant answers was impressive, occasional hallucinations highlighted the need for refinement. Reactions from the audience ranged from enthusiasm to skepticism, reflecting the promising yet evolving nature of the technology. The evening took an exciting turn with a presentation by Vitor Mendes Pereira on his OR black box project. This system records, stores, and retrieves data using a network of connected cameras integrated with centralized infrastructure. Its applications span security, procedural debriefing, reporting optimization, and clinical research. Remarkably, the project has already shown significant impacts, including improved compliance with protocols, better checklist adherence, reduced mortality and ICU admissions, and enhanced case load management and infrastructure efficiency. Vitor concluded by unveiling an impressive Endovascular Procedure AI Supervisor developed through this infrastructure, showcasing its potential to revolutionize procedural oversight and decision-making.
