Summer Search believes young people should have the opportunity to fulfill their potential, regardless of their circumstances. Young people across the nation possess unique strengths, resilience, and tremendous potential, yet many face systemic inequities that can limit their potential. As a result, their ability to obtain postsecondary degrees, participate in the workforce, or gain financial stability is often stifled. Since 1990, we have partnered with high schools, community-based organizations, families, and supporters to provide opportunities for high school students from low-income communities to overcome systemic inequities through mentoring and transformative experiences. OUR ALUMNI ARE 3 TIMES MORE LIKELY to graduate with a 4-year degree than their peers and become the kind of leaders our country needs—civic leaders, advocates, industry leaders, teachers, mothers, and fathers. Their collective leadership ripples across the community, future generations, and contributes to a more equitable society.

It's been a decade since I received a life-changing scholarship from Summer Search NYC that allowed me to experience a part of the United States I knew little about... Growing up between La Republica Dominicana and the Bronx, I had little exposure to the Southwest—but all that changed when I joined the 21-day Southwest Soulquest program with Deer Hill Expeditions in July 2014. From crossing the iconic Four Corners of the Southwest (Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah), backpacking through the Continental Divide, reaching elevations of 13,000 feet while touching snow in the middle of July, to working closely with our incredible host, Wynona Halwood in Navajo Nation, Arizona. We helped prepare for her annual Back-to-School event, where 200 local students receive essential school supplies. As part of the project, we: Built a structure for the event by digging holes and securing concrete-filled pipes, Rebuilt rock walkways, improved fencing, moved gates for the family’s animal corrals, and Explored Canyons Del Muerto and de Chelly which was the most humbling experience and an honor to have a glimpse into the deep history of the region and culture of Navajo Nation. Through 60 hours of hands-on community service, I learned about resilience, teamwork, and a way of life so different from my own. This experience not only broadened my worldview but instilled in me a lifelong commitment to service. Happy #NationalApprenticeshipWeek! Summer Search is thrilled to celebrate the power of apprenticeships in fostering talent and creative alternative pathways for individuals to thrive in their careers. Did you know that Summer Search has been partnering with Aon since 2019? Through our partnership with Aon, we’re working to expand the impact of our mentoring expertise by mentoring apprentices based at Aon offices in New York, San Francisco and the Greater Philadelphia region. These apprentices are concurrently pursuing an Associates degree at a local community college and working full-time at Aon. We’re so excited to be supporting the next generation of leaders! One such leader is Jahniya Knox, a Summer Search participant and Aon apprentice who was recently recognized by the Philadelphia Apprentice Network (PAN) on the November 12th Kickoff:” Building Futures Together” for National Apprenticeship Week!
