What’s Real vs. What’s Next  ● In Use Now - Operations, Insights, and Customer Service: Retailers are leveraging tools like ChatGPT and AI-enabled vendor solutions to streamline workflows such as content creation, analyzing reviews for product insights, and Tier 1 customer support. The quickest ROI comes from optimizing one workflow step at a time with AI, then progressing systematically. ● What’s Close - Personalized CX, Product Development, Marketing Assets: These applications demand higher quality standards (e.g., outfit recommendations, product images), tightly integrated systems (e.g., enriched product data, shopper profiles), and skilled oversight (e.g., brand voice training, rapid iteration). Stand-alone AI solutions often fall short. Retailers are having the most success by collaborating with their trusted platforms to connect the dots and unlock these use cases. 2. Practical Insights  ● AI and LLMs Need Context: Generative AI and LLMs only become “enterprise-ready” when paired with systems like personalization engines, styling engines, and enriched data. For instance, a robust LLM can’t deliver personalized style advice without shopper intent and detailed product attribution. Assess what data and systems feed into the AI to set realistic expectations. Don’t settle for solutions that only offer the AI, but ask you to provide the other essential data and systems. ● Leverage Your Tech Vendors: Rather than attempting to figure out solutions in-house, leverage the resources of your trusted tech partners. Share your top problems areas or exciting “wishlist” opportunities. Your tech vendor can likely now solve that problem or create that feature much faster than before, at a fraction of the cost. 3. Cautions & Risks  ● Don’t Sacrifice Quality: AI’s promise of speed and scale must not compromise quality. Many solutions in the market that seem appealing (cheap, quick, simple) lead to subpar results, damaging shopper trust and frustrating internal teams. Retailers are increasingly being burned by the promise of something shiny and new. ● Beware the “Black Box”: Demand transparency from AI providers. Understand how the AI works, what controls exist, how issues are addressed, and how quickly outputs can be adjusted.
