🌟 Staff Spotlight: Rudy Nevarez, STE San Jose – Program Manager Rudy first joined us through our Employment Social Enterprise, Streets Team Enterprises (STE), as a Participant Employee upon release of incarceration. His quick ability to learn on the job and help fellow crew members earned him a promotion to Crew Supervisor about a month later. Months later, he was offered a promotion to Program Manager where he oversees our San Jose highway maintenance crews. As a Program Manager, Rudy is responsible for reporting data and updates on the crew's beautification work to the contract funders, building relationships with funders, partners, and outreach individuals, and addressing any issues that may arise in the program. One of Rudy's most meaningful memories with DST, though a very frightening moment, occurred when he helped save a crew member's life. This person had been quietly struggling with substance use issues and overdosed while the crew was returning to their launch site. Rudy, along with a colleague, rushed to administer naloxone (Narcan) in an effort to revive him. The paramedics later stated that the three doses of naloxone were likely what saved his life. He primarily supports our Participant Employees—many of whom have experienced homelessness or incarceration—in their journey back to the workforce. Having once been in their shoes as a crew member and with lived experience, he is able to connect on a deeper level and inspire his crew to work toward their goals alongside our Case Managers and Employment Specialists. “What better way to give back?” says Rudy. In fact, Rudy applied to have his record expunged when he became a Crew Supervisor. Now, with a clean slate, he is determined to continue rebuilding his life. Since being granted record expungement, Rudy has returned to school to pursue an Associate degree in Business and Administration. He says he never thought he would have the opportunity to obtain a “desk job,” as societal expectations had limited him to labor work. He explains that he has fallen in love with this work and is eager to see how far he can progress with DST. We are proud of how far Rudy has come. Shoutout to Rudy! 💚🧡💜 #DowntownStreetsTeam #EmployeeSpotlight #ProfessionalDevelopment #InternalGrowthOpportunities #Programs #NonProfit #EndHomelessness #WorkforceDevelopment #Reentry #LowBarrierEmployment

We had an amazing time participating in Santa Run SV last week! 🎅🏃♀️ It was a fun way to spread holiday cheer while raising funds for DST. Thanks to events like this, we can continue keeping Downtown San Jose beautiful with the help of our dedicated beautification volunteers who we are supporting in recovering from homelessness. Merry Christmas to those who celebrate today! #DowntownStreetsTeam #SantaRunSV #Race #Santa #CostumeContest #Charity #Donation #GivingBack #SanJose #SiliconValley

Today is National Homeless Memorial Day (NHMD), a day to honor the lives of those who have passed away while experiencing homelessness. Many often view homelessness in numbers and headlines, but for us, we see people who are valuable and deserve dignity. For homeless service providers and those with lived experience, NHMD is a moment to recognize the collective grief that is often overshadowed at other points throughout the year by the urgent nature of this work. During DST’s End of Year celebration, we honor the lives of those we've connected with throughout the year who have passed, reading their names aloud and holding a moment of silence in their memory. It’s a solemn reminder of the deep human impact of homelessness and our ongoing commitment to change. #EndHomelessness #NationalHomelessMemorialDay #NHMD #Remember #Memorial

We are excited to announce that DST is part of the California Regional Initiative for Social Enterprise (CA RISE), along with 60 other amazing employment social enterprises (ESEs), that’s unlocking $25 million in California state funding and expert support to create more jobs and opportunities for Californians facing barriers to employment! This funding aligns with our vision to address homelessness and barriers to sustainable employment, empowering us to scale innovative solutions, expand our reach, and build capacity in the communities we serve.
