About us
Strategy Science seeks to publish outstanding research directed to the challenges of strategic management in both business and non-business organizations. The journal is eclectic with respect to methodologies, including field-based work, large-sample empirical work, and computational and analytic models. Strategy Science is open to a wide variety of underlying disciplinary approaches including economics, operations research, political science, psychology, and sociology. The critical issue with respect to publication is whether the work enhances, in some meaningful manner, our understanding of some substantive issues in the strategy domain. Work is expected to be of a high level of rigor, but rigor itself is not a basis for publication. We encourage authors to take chances, to operate at the boundaries and intersections of existing lines of research, and, ultimately, to aim high --- to produce work that truly pushes the field forward.

Here is the eleventh (and final) article released from the forthcoming Theory-based View Special Issue by Teppo Felin and Matthias Holweg—Theory Is All You Need: AI, Human Cognition, and Causal Reasoning https://lnkd.in/gKxHFA5Q. Felin and Holweg argue that AI mirrors the past, relying on data-driven prediction, while human cognition uses forward-looking causal reasoning. This distinction enables humans to generate new knowledge, innovate, and make decisions under uncertainty—capacities AI fundamentally lacks.

Here is another article released from the forthcoming Theory-based View Special Issue by Arnaldo Camuffo, Alfonso Gambardella, and Andrea Pignataro now available in Articles in Advance—Theory-Driven Strategic Management Decisions https://lnkd.in/gkWtkycb. Core to strategic-decision making under uncertainty is selecting theories of value rather than plans of actions. Executives should select theories through experiments and the value of such experiments increases with the number of theories and with their uncertainty, which also makes theories superadditive.

Here is the tenth article released from the forthcoming Theory-based View Special Issue by Timothy Ott and Douglas Hannah now available in Articles in Advance—On the Origin of Entrepreneurial Theories: How Entrepreneurs Craft Complex Causal Models with Theorizing and Data https://lnkd.in/geMv-uSa. We know that rich causal “theories” help entrepreneurs succeed. But how do entrepreneurs form theories? We study nine platform ventures to unpack specific practices and show how they’re woven together – in a process that’s much richer than prior work might have suggested.

Enjoy the ninth article released from the forthcoming Theory-based View Special Issue by Timo Ehrig and Todd Zenger now available in Articles in Advance—Competing with Theories: Using Awareness and Confidence to Secure Resources and Rents https://lnkd.in/g2tiCYAx. This paper combines the theory-based view and value-added literatures to explore how firms compete with theories to secure resources and one of three forms of rents: awareness rents, confidence rents, or traditional resource rents. Enjoy the eighth article released from the forthcoming Theory-based View Special Issue by Felipe Csaszar, Harsh Ketkar, and Hyunjin Kim now available in Articles in Advance—Artificial Intelligence and Strategic Decision-Making: Evidence from Entrepreneurs and Investors https://lnkd.in/grg5qbyw. Research shows AI's capability to generate and evaluate business strategies comparably to entrepreneurs and VCs, suggesting the potential transformation of strategic decision-making through enhanced search, representation, and aggregation processes.

Another article released from the forthcoming Theory-based View Special Issue by Jake Valentine, Elena Novelli, and Rajshree Agarwal is now available in Articles in Advance—The Theory-Based View and Strategic Pivots: The Effects of Theorization and Experimentation on the Type and Nature of Pivots https://lnkd.in/gw_4QPvT. To make purposeful pivots, neither a "bias for action" nor "paralysis by analysis" works. Entrepreneurs who take the time to articulate the "why" and test their assumptions are more likely to make fewer pivots that are radical, and exhibit both clarity and coherence.

Here is the fifth article released from the forthcoming Theory-based View Special Issue by Violina Rindova and Luis Martins now available in Articles in Advance—The Imagination Advantage: Why and How Strategists Combine Knowledge and Imagination in Developing Theories https://lnkd.in/gvDJMEmR. By combining knowledge with imagination strategists can think beyond what is, and envision what could be, moving ahead of competitors and shaping their industries and the future.
