  • Coaching for performance often has a short-term focus. In my experience, it usually means helping employees address immediate issues—whether it’s improving punctuality, increasing effort, or following through on tasks. This type of coaching can feel remedial, as it’s often aimed at fixing specific problems quickly. The underlying message is, “We need you to correct this behavior now.” However, it’s important to recognize that coaching for performance should never be a substitute for effective management. If an employee is underperforming, the first step should be to ensure that they are being managed effectively. Are expectations clear? Has the employee received the necessary training and support? Are there regular check-ins and feedback? Addressing these questions is crucial before turning to performance coaching. Without effective management, coaching for performance can become a Band-Aid solution rather than addressing the root cause of the issue. When people talk about coaching for development, they usually mean investing in someone’s long-term growth. This approach is often reserved for high-potential employees—those all-stars who show promise and are seen as future leaders within the company. Developmental coaching is about giving these individuals the opportunities and support they need to grow, both in their skills and in their internal capacities. This process is comprehensive and can encompass a range of areas, from technical skills to personal development. The key similarity between these two coaching styles is that both aim to foster growth. However, the major difference lies in the time frame and approach. Developmental coaching is a long-term process. There’s an understanding that growth takes time, and there’s a willingness to invest in that time. Imagine the concept of "redshirting" in college football, where a promising player spends a year learning the system, building their physical strength, and acclimating to the high-pressure environment without the immediate expectation to perform in games. It’s a developmental process designed to prepare them for future success. Coaching for development, with its emphasis on long-term growth and readiness, tends to yield powerful results. It’s akin to redshirting an employee, allowing them the time and space to grow into their potential. While the changes may not be immediate, the outcomes can be tremendous if both the organization and the individual commit to the process. Ultimately, the choice between coaching for performance and coaching for development depends on your goals. If you need quick fixes, performance coaching may be the right approach. But if you’re looking to cultivate lasting growth and prepare your employees for future success, developmental coaching is the way to go.

  • Trust is the foundation of every thriving organization, yet it’s also one of the most fragile elements of workplace culture. A few years ago, Strata Leadership developed Building and Rebuilding Trust, a training program designed to help leaders and teams understand how trust is built, maintained, and repaired when broken. In this article, Nathan Mellor, EdD, PCC, explores why consistency in character and competence is essential to building trust, how shared values can unify teams during uncertainty, and the transformative power of leaders taking ownership of mistakes. Trust can be rebuilt. It begins with a single step. 👉 Read the full article to learn more
