This time of year, it’s easy to fall prey to the cyber bad actors. And, as much as you love them, your trusted employees may be part of the problem! Employees rushing with the stress of holidays, teammates on PTO, and tighter deadlines could accidentally introduce risk – big risk – into your business, network, and data. Today’s scammers take advantage of stress, vacations, and office closures that naturally occur during the holidays, and use them against us. Don’t get stuck paying ransom money to get back your data or unlock your systems. Don’t fall victim to CFO or controller fraud and lose thousands of dollars with a fraudulent bank transfer or payment. Don’t end up on Santa’s naughty list by ignoring your cyber security protocols! Here are some tips to reduce risk during the holidays: 1️⃣ Remind your team that bad actors up their game during the holidays, and you need everyone to be EXTRA cautious. 2️⃣ Remind your team to verify any requests for access, “emergency” transfer of money or payments. If the request came in via email, use the phone to call and verify. 3️⃣ Even though it’s a busy time of year, make backups a priority. 4️⃣ Remind your team to pause and think before clicking, even though it’s a hustle and bustle time of year. Don’t click or follow any links, updates, shipping receipts, order confirmations you were not expecting. Need to check the shipping or order confirmation? Go to that vendor’s website or app. Get a bank text alerting you of fraud? Call your bank directly to verify or get details. Need help updating your cyber security strategy for the new year? Last week we had the pleasure of gathering with some members of our Maryland in-office team for our annual holiday luncheon! We really value these opportunities to connect as friends and colleagues and converse about anything BUT shop talk!
