Wisconsin has crazy rules for companies that raise significant venture capital. If a Delaware corporation (which is still the standard) is headquartered in Wisconsin, it has to file an annual report with the state including the amount of additional paid in capital for the year. Then, the state charges the startup a fee for the assets/capital that it has in Wisconsin. The higher percentage of the company's assets that are in Wisconsin, the higher the fee. The more money the company raises, the higher the fee. This rule/fee is causing companies to think about moving people/assets outside of Wisconsin. The fee only applies to foreign corporations (such as a Delaware corporation, that qualifies to do business as a foreign corporation in Wisconsin). Not foreign corporations that are certified as QNBVs by the WEDC. Not foreign LLCs. And not corporations formed in Wisconsin. Under this rule, Companies are punished for hiring more people/placing more assets in Wisconsin.

About four or five months ago, Raj Muthupandiyan and I were brainstorming on how to better connect and inform local area Manufacturers on technology. And a new user group was born 🙌 - MKE Manufacturing Tech User Group. Last night, we held our third monthly meeting at the Connected Systems Institute (CSI) at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. We had a very engaged crowd, and I really enjoyed meeting some new people, and learning about how CSI is partnering with Microsoft to improve talent and technology at Manufacturers. Special thanks to Joe Hamann, Shamar Webster for the cool tour, and hosting us! 🙏
