  • This week is Idiopathic Hypersomnia Awareness Week. 😴😴😴 Idiopathic Hypersomnia is a neurological sleep/wake disorder characterized by excessive sleep and daytime sleepiness despite extraordinary amounts of good quality sleep. It is a debilitating condition often significantly affecting work, education and relationships. IH is often compared to narcolepsy, but the disorders are markedly different as there is no cataplexy (sudden and transient episode of muscle weakness) associated with it Symptoms include: 😴Excessive sleep. 10+ hours of nighttime sleep plus daytime naps. It is not uncommon for sufferers to sleep in excess of 16 hours in a day. 😴Difficulty waking from sleep (even after long sleep) and with the use of multiple alarms, lights, and help from other people. 😴Cognitive dysfunction. This includes memory problems, automatic behavior, and difficulties with concentration and attention. If this sounds like you - if you are struggling with staying awake throughout the day it may be time speak with a sleep specialist. Many have IH for many years without knowing it. To determine if you have IH or another sleep disorder it is best to have a sleep study. • This week in May is dedicated to those who serve behind the walls of our prisons and detention centers, our Correctional Officers. START WITH SLEEP, LLC has had the pleasure of educating the graduating classes, current officers, and coordinators from NYS Department of Correctional Services throughout New York State. One program we have been part of for the past 7 years is the LMHF® Strive to Thrive Program which is held from May to October at the beautiful, Beaver Hollow Conference Center. It is a program dedicated to protective service and public employees to help them manage stress through the proper tools including quality rest and sleep! This is especially important in this field as these shift workers hold the highest prevalence for sleep disorders at upwards of 55%. work. Our sleep health curriculum addresses: ☑ The most common factors that affect the sleep of this population. ☑ How to manage your schedule with varying degrees of shift work. ☑ How sleep and mental health are closely connected. ☑ The distinction between rest and sleep to help manage stress effectively. ☑ The importance of getting evaluated for a sleep disorder if symptoms are present. ☑ Sleep Optimization We are proud of the work we do in this space as it improves both personal health and safety. The LMHF® Strive to Thrive program is a holistic approach to improving the health and quality of life of all First Responders and other public employees in high-stress positions or personal situations by learning and experiencing the skills and knowledge to manage stress through proper rest/sleep, exercise & nutrition. This program is offered for FREE to first responders, protective services, and public employees. • For the past 8 years since its inception, START WITH SLEEP, LLC has been a delegate for World Sleep Society World Sleep Day! This year was no exception. As part of START WITH SLEEP’s mission towards advocacy for the importance of sleep health in the workplace, this year founder and sleep health educator, Soda Kuczkowski delivered a keynote to Erie 1 BOCES at their Creating Healthy Schools and Communities Wellness Conference titled – “Rest, Recharge, Thrive: Building Strong Foundations for Sleep Health”. The program emphasized our commitment to advocating for sleep health in the workplace and promoting wellness in educational settings. The presentation highlighted the significance of integrating sleep education into school wellness programs, fostering a culture of health that benefits the entire school community. By prioritizing educator well-being, we set a positive example for students, encouraging healthy habits that extend beyond the classroom and into the home environment. The keynote explored how sleep education can enhance overall health and well-being, support learning and development, and serve as a vital tool for stress management and performance optimization. Through an interactive discussion, attendees gained a deeper understanding of the profound impact of sleep on academic achievement, workplace productivity, and overall quality of life. We were so excited to offer this shift in perspective to elevate the importance of sleep health, as it contributes to building and creating healthier communities, thereby fostering a culture of vitality and success in our schools and neighborhoods. • FACT: More than 80% of teens DO NOT get enough sleep. Sleep Health = Mental Health Research shows a clear link between sleep deprivation and teenage depression and anxiety. We also know that an ongoing lack of sleep can increase teens' likelihood of using drugs and alcohol. While mandating mental health in school is an important step in supporting our youth we hope they understand the foundation by which mental health is managed - It starts with SLEEP! START WITH SLEEP, LLC offers schools programs to address this NEED. If you are a parent, teacher, administrator, or community leader we urge you to help bring the message to your school on what creating healthy sleep habits means for the future of the mental, emotional and physical health of our youth. Happy National Sleep Awareness Week®! This week-long, yearly event started by the National Sleep Foundation spotlights the importance of sleep in our daily lives and encourages everyone to learn about habits, practices, and routines that improve our sleep quality and overall health. The yearly theme of Sleep Awareness Week is ”Your Best Slept Self.” Its mission is to prompt the public to reflect on their sleep habits and consciously choose to prioritize sleep in their lives as it impacts everything about our physical, mental, and emotional health. The connection between sleep and health is real! It impacts every single one of us! This year the results of their annual poll reflect the growing concern for mental health, specifically in our teen population. The results showed a strong correlation between poor sleep and depressive symptoms in Teens. Some Key Findings: • The American teen is not their Best Slept Self®. • 8 out of every 10 teens don’t get enough sleep. • Over 1 in 3 teens have mild or greater depressive symptoms. • Almost ¾ of teens say their emotional well-being is negatively impacted when they sleep less than usual. • Nearly 70% of teens dissatisfied with their sleep report loneliness, the same rate who have mild or greater depressive symptoms. •Teenagers who start school before 8:30am have higher levels of depressive symptoms than those who start school later.
