The article "Matters of the Heart" in the latest SWIMMER Magazine issue highlights the experience of an elite swimmer's run in with coronary artery disease and how he partnered with our Founder, Ankit B. Shah, MD, MPH, to get back to swimming. Important reminders for all masters athletes: 1 Athlete status and regular exercise do not make immune to heart disease 2 Do not ignore traditional cardiovascular risk factors just because you exercise regularly. Treat your cholesterol or blood pressure if they remain high despite high volumes of training 3 Do not ignore subtle signs and symptoms such as an unexplained drop in pace or new exertional limitation 4 Partner with a physician who understands the demands of exercise on the cardiovascular system #sportscardiology USA Swimming U.S. Masters Swimming

Our Founder and President Ankit B. Shah, MD, MPH discusses his role in caring for Olympic Athletes. “We will routinely see these athletes for a second opinion, and even if we can reverse the diagnosis and say this is all normal athletic findings, you cannot always reverse the mental health aspect of things. In sports, where getting gold or not medaling can be decided by a couple of milliseconds, we need to make sure we are not harming the athletes.” Dr. Aaron Baggish American College of Cardiology TCTMD #paris2024 #sportscardiology https://lnkd.in/e28RV4WQ

Always a pleasure to speak at this incredible USA Swimming medical conference. Big thanks to Keenan Robinson and Dr. Thomas Kremen for leading the way (and those before them, including Dr. Scott Rodeo) in creating a robust multidisciplinary team to care for this incredible group of athletes. We need to educate ourselves and our athletes on the emerging data linking marijuana, vaping, and energy drinks to cardiovascular complications and implications from antidoping perspective.
