  • Lies, damn lies and statistics. While the origin of the quote may be subject to debate, its applicability to the art of benchmarking is not. I explore the drawbacks of relying on benchmarks alone in assessing performance in my whitepaper entitled "Beyond the Numbers: The Pitfalls of Blindly Following Financial Benchmarks to Assess Corporate Health". Explore this and other case studies and perspectives at www.swadviser.com and reach out to me at john.bennett@swadviser.com for a deeper conversation on this and other topics.

Good outsourcing boils down to solid communication and making sure both the client and the provider benefit. I've been on both sides and seen how things can go south, leading to lots of blame games. It's surprising how lightly some people enter into these partnerships, considering what's at stake. I've got a few tips listed here, but I'm sure you've got some of your own to add! It would be be great if I could share my experiences with you in more detail. Let me know if you want to connect.

Many large-scale technology implementations fail because of the tendency to carry over outdated and inefficient processes into new systems. This results in a significant sub-optimization of your investment. Enter the Zero-Based Redesign approach, which views processes from the perspective of a blank sheet of paper. It focuses on what the business needs versus what the business has always done. Considered a best practice approach by strategy firms such as McKinsey and Bain, it might be worth evaluating for your own organization. Are you ready to optimize your investments and take your business to the next level? It might be time to give Zero-Based Redesign a try.

Value Management – measuring the success of your transformation initiatives Successful transformation initiatives require more than just ambitious plans and promises to stakeholders. It's essential to measure progress against goals to ensure that objectives are being met. This is where the Value Management Office comes into play. The Value Management Office is responsible for measuring and reporting on the qualitative and quantitative "promises" of the transformation. This function ensures that stakeholders agree on the accomplishment of goals, such as $100M in savings or a 10% reduction in staffing levels. If objectives are not being met, early detection allows for course correction and recalibration of expectations. If your company doesn't have a Value Management Office, there are options for building the capability in-house or outsourcing it. Outsourcing often provides an extra degree of independence and discipline, but hybrid models can also be set up. Remember, "what gets measured, gets done." Don't overlook the importance of ongoing measurement and reporting in your transformation initiatives.
