We are so proud that this partnership provides educational opportunities to the inmate population. Congratulations to this class for successfully completing their two-year course! #WeAreCorrections
This month, universities across the nation will host Commencement ceremonies, turning stages into launching pads where graduates step forward, claim their diplomas, and set their sights on the next great adventure. Last week we celebrated a very different Commencement – not on a stage, but within the razor-wire fences of the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC). And instead of stepping out into the world, these 18 graduates will be transferred to other prisons. The inmates enrolled in CIU’s Prison Initiative program at Kirkland Correctional Institution are graduating with a purpose: to bring the message of freedom in Christ to those who are imprisoned. Each year, up to 15 qualified inmates are selected to participate in a two-year program taught by CIU professors. After graduation, they receive fully accredited associate’s degrees and are relocated to other South Carolina prisons, serving as missionaries within the walls. Since 2007, over 200 inmates have graduated from the program, serving in 21 institutions with a recidivism rate among graduates of only 5%. The annual budget is $200,000 — $5,000 per year per student. All students receive full scholarships, and the program is completely donor funded. Let's hear it for the Class of 2024! 🎓
