We've been bringing pets and the people who love them together for 150+ years.
About us
At the San Francisco SPCA we envision a world in which the love people share with animals uplifts humanity to a state of greater compassion. On a spring day in 1868, San Francisco banker James Sloan Hutchinson caught sight of two men dragging a terrified hog along the rough cobblestone street. Appalled, Hutchinson stepped in to stop the cruelty and rescue the hog. The incident crystallized Hutchinson’s concern over widespread animal abuse, and he soon rallied 15 like-minded citizens to found the San Francisco SPCA. Since then the SF SPCA has become one of San Francisco’s most enduring and respected institutions. It is a national leader in saving homeless cats and dogs and working to end animal abandonment. We all share a common passion here at the San Francisco SPCA. Not just for the animals saved, but for their companions and those in our community who then foster, volunteer, or adopt. Whether affected by illness, injury, or homelessness, the animals we help need our expertise and compassion. You could wake up every day knowing you’ll be “doing good work” in a fulfilling environment where no two days are the same. The SF SPCA has been at the forefront of animal welfare for 150+ years, and Vision 2030 is our plan to positively impact 5+ million lives over the next decade. We are looking for animal-loving professionals to help us turn this vision into reality!

It’s Giving Tuesday and what better way to support than by helping animals find their forever home for the holidays. 🏠🐾❤️ It’s becoming harder to adopt out animals, especially adult dogs like Juno who has been waiting 263 days to find her family. With your help, we know Juno will get one of her own. Your gift will help cover the cost of waiving adoption fees for animals five months and older this holiday season, and will automatically be matched up to $100k to go twice as far. With waived adoptions, we hope that barrier no longer stands in the way of Juno being able to find her perfect match. 🌟 🩵 Donate today: https://bit.ly/3BbQ7ec Every donation, no matter how big or small, will support our mission. Thank you! 🙏 #GivingTuesday

Thank you to the members of the California State Assembly for their strong, bi-partisan support for SB 1233 sponsored by Senator Scott Wilk, which passed on a vote of 59-0. If signed by Governor Newson, SB 1233 would create High-Quality, High-Volume Spay/Neuter (HQHVSN) certification programs for students and currently licensed veterinary professionals at both of California’s prestigious veterinary schools. The bill is supported by a large coalition of veterinary professionals, animal shelters, and animal welfare groups seeking to address the pet overpopulation problem in the state. A special note of thanks to Assemblymember Brian Maienschein for presenting the bill on the Assembly Floor for Senator Wilk, as well as to Assemblymember Buffy Wicks and Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas for their leadership.

San Francisco SPCA reposted this
June 1st, 2024 is California Adopt-a-Pet Day! 🏡❤️ The California State Senate passed Senate Resolution 94 proclaiming June 1st, 2024 as California Adopt-a-Pet Day. Shelters all across CA are filling up with lovable, adoptable animals and it is our hope that the momentum of this day will not only support our shelter and shelter partners, but also find 2,024 animals their forever homes across the state. The proclamation of this very special day is made possible through our partnership with CalAnimals and the ASPCA. Thank you to Senator Mike McGuire for introducing the resolution, Senators Alvarado-Gil, Ashby, Atkins, Becker, Blakespear, Caballero, Dahle, Dodd, Durazo, Eggman, Gonzalez, Hurtado, Laird, Menjivar, Newman, Nguyen, Niello, Ochoa Bogh, Portantino, Roth, Rubio, Seyarto, Stern, Umberg, Wahab, and Wilk for co-authoring, and Senator Scott Weiner for a yes vote! #CAAdoptAPetDay 🐾
