Last week, the HARMONIC project was proud to take the stage at #SIDS2024, where Ramon Dalmau presented our latest research on multi-objective air traffic flow management. As air traffic continues to grow, balancing operational efficiency, passenger needs, and environmental sustainability is more important than ever. Our work leverages lexicographic optimization—a cutting-edge method that prioritizes key objectives such as: ➡️ Reducing delays ✈️ ➡️ Cutting fuel consumption ♻️ ➡️ Managing traffic hotspots 📈 By addressing one priority at a time (e.g., minimizing delays first, then tackling fuel consumption), our model ensures decisions align with real-world priorities—without compromising on critical goals. 💡 💻 Validated using historical air traffic data from France 🇫🇷 and Spain 🇪🇸, this innovative approach showcases how we can make Europe's skies safer, more efficient, and more sustainable. 🚀 Excited to have joined the SESAR Innovation Days (SIDs) in Rome this week! It was a privilege to present with Nicolas Suarez the poster “Advanced DCB”, showcasing the amazing work being done by Solution 382 (SESAR 3 HARMONIC Project) and Solution 331 (SESAR 3 ISLAND Project) as we work towards achieving a Digital Capacity in ATM. ✈️📊 ✅ HARMONIC’s Solution 382 integrates Dynamic Airspace Configuration (DAC) with the Integrated Network management and extended ATC Planning(INAP) to enhance efficiency and flexibility in airspace management. It automates airspace configurations using optimal sectorization algorithms, improves decision-making with data-driven “what-if” tools for demand-capacity planning, and incorporates DMA Type 1/2 into INAP for better sector capacity management and flight efficiency through digital NOTAMs. ✅ ISLAND’s Solution 331 leverages AI/ML techniques to optimize sector design, enhance traffic prediction, and improve demand-capacity management. It minimizes delays and emissions through smarter pre-departure and en-route adjustments, contributing to a more efficient and sustainable European ATM system. These solutions are paving the way for a more resilient, efficient, and sustainable airspace, supporting the SESAR vision of a digitally integrated European ATM system. 👏🏼A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to making this edition of the SIDs such a resounding success! ENAV ✈️ and IDS AirNav 🌐, in collaboration with the University “La Sapienza” 🎓, are advancing the Dynamic Airspace Configuration (DAC) concept within the SESAR3 Industrial Research Project HARMONIC Solution 382. At 2024 SESAR Innovation Day in Rome 🇮🇹, they presented their paper 📄 on developing a DAC algorithm that will be integrated into the IDS AirNav Local Traffic Load Monitoring Tool (LTLMT). This tool 🛠️ is designed to support the Flight Manager Position (FMP) in identifying the optimal configuration for Area Control Centres (ACCs) 🗺️. The DAC algorithm, developed by the University “La Sapienza” of Rome, represents an enhancement 🔄 over the previous prototype tested in the SESAR PJ.09-W2 Solution 44 context. This new version considers not only traffic counts but also incorporates additional constraints, such as Dynamic Management Areas (DMA) and convective weather phenomena ⛈️, providing a more comprehensive solution for effective air traffic management. 🚀 Successful Paper Gaming Session at CRIDA A.I.E. with the SESAR 3 HARMONIC Project!🚀 ➡ This week, we hosted a two-day paper gaming session at CRIDA A.I.E. as part of the SESAR 3 HARMONIC Project led by EUROCONTROL! 🎯 Focusing on Solutions 0381 and 0382, we tackled workflows for Demand and Capacity Balancing (#DCB) in both nominal and critical (high-density) scenarios, examining strategies for spot management, efficiency trade-offs, and network stability. 🤝 Participants explored the potential of DCB solvers and what-if simulations, from complexity-coded alerts to optimized routing strategies. 💡These discussions provided valuable insights into refining our prototypes and shaping resilient, adaptive solutions within the SESAR 3 HARMONIC Project. ✈️ We look forward to advancing the future of air traffic flow management together! 🌍 SESAR 3 HARMONIC Project CRIDA A.I.E. 🌍✈️ We had an incredibly productive PMB and validation workshop in London, marked by excellent face-to-face participation!  We were thrilled to have representatives from: EUROCONTROL, ENAIRE/CRIDA A.I.E., Frequentis, Indra DSNA DTI ICE, ENAV, IDS AirNav, JKU, NG Aviation, Swiss International Air Lines, skyguide, NATS Polish Air Navigation Services Agency joined us remotely, ensuring comprehensive collaboration. During the PMB, we discussed the project's progress, grant management aspects, and outlined the next steps. The workshop segment was dedicated to focusing on the upcoming validation exercises, a crucial step for our project's success. A big thank you to all partners for their valuable contributions and active participation. Together, we are driving innovation and excellence in our field. How is SESAR 3 HARMONIC Project progressing? Recently we've successfully completed the first technical review of the HARMONIC Project. We've reflected on our progress and discussed our clear objectives for the future with SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking representatives. This important milestone demonstrates how effective collaboration and strategic planning can drive technological progress HARMONIC brings innovation closer to deployment with two key solutions: - 0381 Enhanced Demand Management - 0382 Enhancing DCB Efficiency: Advanced DAC Process These solutions are designed to improve the DCB process, paving the way for a more efficient network.
