With 1,640+ participants, this year’s DoD Energy and Environment Innovation Symposium had a record attendance from our science, technology, and defense communities. Last week was packed with technical sessions, lightning talks, posters, and technology demonstrations that showcased our efforts to drive efficiencies, reduce costs, expand partnerships, and ultimately deliver value to the warfighter. We kicked off the 2024 DoD Energy and Environment Innovation Symposium with a tremendous plenary session that included remarks from Rebecca Isacowitz (DASD ER&O), Sherri Goodman, Dr. Kimberly Yearick Spangler Ph.D, Brig. Gen. Jacob Middleton, and Honorable Brendan Owens (ASD EI&E). They spoke on the importance of defense innovation to support our warfighters in confronting evolving threats and operating in contested environments, from installations to the battlefield. Thank you to our featured project speakers (Dr. Nicholas Judson, Dr. Emily Crownover, and Dr. Lynne Baumgras) for also providing lightning talks on their SERDP and ESTCP-funded work to advance installation energy resilience, PFAS soil remediation, and munitions response technologies at underwater sites.

The underwater environment poses new challenges for remediating #UXO, with water causing unpredictable effects on explosives and posing more difficulties in locating and classifying munitions than on land.
