Alleviating hunger by helping people help themselves since 1959

About us

Self-Help International (SHI) works at the grassroots level to improve quality of life and increase the income of rural people by introducing appropriate, sustainable agricultural methods. Founded in 1959, SHI's programs are designed to promote self-reliance with dignity and to create links between farmers and their communities. SHI carries out projects in Ghana and Nicaragua that introduce high protein corn (Quality Protein Maize) to improve crop yields and nutrition. Post-harvest technologies are introduced which include corn cribs, dryers and shellers. SHI's micro-credit project provides opportunities to empower women through its training sessions for effective enterprise management and loans through use of revolving funds.

  • "The first topic was self-esteem, which encouraged me a lot. I understood that I needed to make changes in my personal life to be able to help my family...I thank Self-Help International and the Women’s Empowerment Program for the support I have received from training, donations and loans, because in this way I have been able to help my family without having to emigrate to another country. For that reason I ask that the Women’s Empowerment Program be extended by making other women aware.” Nora, a client of SHI Women Empowerment Program. This year Self-Help was able to assist more than 886 women within our partner communities in Ghana and Nicaragua. These women receive business training and support along with micro-credit loans to be successful in their endeavors. Your support plays a pivotal role in empowering women like Nora so that she has the tools need to provide for her children and family. To read Nora's full story here: https://lght.ly/8e8cmin
