At SVL, many of our students are seeking to modify their voices completely to align with their gender expression. This process can be pretty demanding on the body, so to avoid any chance of them developing vocal tension, we make sure they speak with as much breath support as possible. Vocal health is our priority, and we pride ourselves in giving our students access to their true voices, in a healthy and sustained way. #transvoice #genderaffirmingvoice #slp #voicetraining #asha2024

An important aspect of teaching trans voice training or even speech therapy generally is to teach your student how to self-assess correctly between lessons. Here are techniques that can help you keep your students focused and motivated when outside of sessions. Whether you’re working with a coach or self-training online, there’ll come points where you won’t be able to receive feedback or guidance on your voice from another person. It’s important to learn how to identify areas in need of improvement yourself, as well as recognize successful changes when you hit your goals. #seattlevoicelab #transgender #voicetraining #transvoice #transvoicelessons #voicefeminization #speechlanguagepathology

You call it gender-affirming voice therapy. We call it passing. You call it the new frontier. We call it survival. Trans voice work just got a lot more serious—not only for your clients but for you as well. Under Project 2025, new legislation could potentially label those who educate and support transgender voices as sex offenders. "Educators and public librarians who purvey it (transgender ideologies) should be classed as registered sex offenders," they say. So, are you here for the long haul? Because, for us and the communities we serve, there is no choice. #GenderAffirmingVoice #TransRights #VoiceTherapy #StandWithUs #transgender

Seattle Voice Lab has helped work with over 3000 trans voice students find their voices. But what makes trans voice training different than other practices or disciplines in voice training? The key is a focus on radical self expression. 🩷 If you are a voice instructor, speech coach, or SLP looking for more information on how you can work with the unique needs of trans voice clients, please reach out! We are happy to answer any questions you may have. #seattlevoicelab #transvoiceteacher #transtips #transgender #mtf #voicetraining #transvoice #transvoicelessons #voicefeminization #voicemasculinization

For this week’s video, our own Hannah Sumner explores the concept of the mixed voice. In trans voice training, this refers to the process of combining the upper register of the chest voice (M1) with the head voice (M2). The result is a voice that’s blended, offering the brightness of falsetto with the more comfortable speaking range of the modal voice. This is often more desirable for trans clients, especially as they grow older or settle into professional life. Great work explaining, Hannah! #voiceteacher #slp #seattlevoicelab #transvoiceteacher #transgender #mtf #voicetraining #transvoice #transvoicelessons #voicefeminization

Exciting News: Gender-Affirming Voice in Speech Therapy Education! It’s been an incredible journey at Seattle Voice Lab, where I’ve spent the past several years developing techniques for gender-affirming voice therapy and creating a mentorship program specifically for voice coaches and speech-language pathologists. This mentorship program allows participants to gain hands-on experience, shadow our expert instructors, and teach alongside them, offering a unique opportunity to apply the Seattle Voice Lab techniques in real-world settings. Upon completion, participants receive our trademarked Trans Voice Certification™, equipping them with the skills, confidence, and knowledge needed to transform the lives of their clients and offer evidence-based affirming care. I also contributed to an article for NSSLHA Pride, The Importance of Resonance in Gender-Affirming Voice Therapy https://lnkd.in/gCpkVitK This blog has since been added to the syllabus at Lehman College for their ethics and speech pathology course. It’s such a proud moment to see our research being used to teach future speech-language pathologists, helping them approach voice modification with care and respect for each individual’s identity. The paper focuses on what I have learned in my 4 years working at Seattle Voice Lab. Acoustic features like resonance, vocal fold mass, and open quotient, which play a huge role in gender-affirming voice therapy. These elements are essential for developing techniques that truly support the voice needs of trans and non-binary individuals, and it's amazing to know that my work will help shape the next generation of SLPs. And earlier this year, I had the privilege of speaking at the ASHA SIG 19 Speech Science event on gender-affirming voice. It was a wonderful experience to share insights, dive into best practices, and engage in conversations that are pushing our field forward. The more we talk about gender-affirming voice therapy, the more inclusive and impactful our work will be. It’s been a big year for Seattle Voice Lab, and I’m incredibly grateful to my colleagues, mentors, and students who have been part of this journey. There’s still a lot of work to be done, but it feels like we’re moving in the right direction! At SVL, we encourage our students to experiment often, and one of the best tools for this exploration is imitation. By studying the qualities in voices they find appealing, they can have stronger understandings of the mechanisms of the voice and also how it can be constructed to best represent one's self-expression. #seattlevoicelab #transvoiceteacher #transtips #transgender #mtf #voicetraining #transvoice #transvoicelessons #voicefeminization #transwoman #transfemme #ftm #transman #voicemasculinization #transmasc #nonbinary #genderfluid #trans
