Recruiting, preparing and retaining educators that reflect the rich diversity of Seattle Public Schools.
About us
The Seattle Teacher Residency (STR) program was developed in 2012 by the Alliance in partnership with the University of Washington, Seattle Education Association and Seattle Public Schools to recruit, prepare and retain high quality elementary and special education teachers for students furthest from educational justice in Seattle Public Schools. Educators primarily come from the communities they serve, teaching mainly in Title I elementary schools. The 14-month program is intentionally designed to recruit and prepare future educators who share a passion for educational justice. Once accepted and enrolled, residents complete coursework integrated with a 1-year mentored practicum to earn a Masters in Teaching (MIT) degree from the University of Washington College of Education. Upon graduation, they receive priority in securing teaching positions and make a commitment to teaching in a Seattle elementary or special education setting for five years with ongoing support from the STR community. The diversity of STR residents continues to increase the district's overall percent of BIPOC educators, positively impacting students' educational experiences.

5 Creative Ways to Get Parents More Engaged As educators, we know that parent engagement can work wonders on student success. But how do we go beyond traditional emails to create meaningful connections with families? In my latest video, "5 Creative Ways to Get Parents More Engaged," I dive into some approaches that I believe schools and educators can use to create stronger partnerships with families. Here’s a sneak peek of what I’ll cover: ✅ Hosting Parent Spotlights: Celebrate diverse talents and contributions of parents by giving them a platform to motivate their students. ✅ Level up your Communication: Transform how you connect with families using, dynamic, personalized tools and updates. ✅ Turn Conferences into Celebrations: Shift the focus to recognize growth and achievements in a way that excites parents and students. ✅ Let your Families know what your Students are Learning: Keep families in the loop with regular, engaging updates. ✅ Throw a Community Event at your School that embraces everyone: Host inclusive, memorable events that embrace and celebrate everyone in your school community. 💡 Whether you're an educator, administrator, or someone passionate about building bridges between schools and communities, my hope is for these ideas to spark inspiration! 🙌🏾 Let’s start a conversation! What’s the most creative way you’ve seen schools engage families? Drop your ideas and experiences in the comments! #Education #ParentEngagement #SchoolCommunity #InnovationInEducation

Thank you to our wonderful colleagues Grace Yim & Zoe Poynor who helped table at today’s Future of the Youth Forum on behalf of STR! The event gathered high schoolers from Franklin, Ingraham, Cleveland & ATS. We got to meet many amazing students who were interested in the teaching profession… hopefully we’ll see them in a few years to get their Masters after undergrad! 😎 🎓 It’s all about representation for us: the more that we can get out there and let our young people know that we need them to come back into our classrooms and that teaching can be a career they see themselves in. The profession is made up of a majority white women & it takes intentionally tapping on shoulders of men, of immigrants, of BIPOC and lgbtqia+ folks at events like this to keep up the work of diversifying reflective leaders in our classrooms.
