End violent conflict. It’s our purpose — our call to action.
About us
Search for Common Ground is the world's largest dedicated peacebuilding organization. Founded in 1982 and nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018, Search for Common Ground works to transform the way the world deals with conflict - away from adversarial approaches and towards collaborative problem solving. We work with local partners to find culturally appropriate means to strengthen societies' capacity to deal with conflicts constructively: to understand the differences and act on the commonalities. Our mission is to transform the way the world deals with conflict: away from adversarial approaches, toward cooperative solutions. We have developed a broad array of operational methods, which we call collectively our "toolbox." These include well-known conflict resolution techniques, such as mediation and facilitation, and less traditional ones, like TV productions, radio soap opera, and community organising. We have found that employing several tools at the same time increases their overall effectiveness.

Track II diplomacy (consisting of informal dialogues among non-governmental or unofficial actors such as academics, religious actors, retired senior officials, or NGOs) has long been a conflict resolution tactic that helps offer an environment where groups that might otherwise have been excluded from peace processes can congregate and build trust while discussing potential solutions. Our founder, John Marks, has written a piece revealing how our engagement with career diplomats in our Track II work has developed over the decades, sharing two examples of successful collaborations. 🔗 Give the article a read to find out more about our Track II diplomacy work in Iran and Macedonia: https://lnkd.in/eSdzBgRa

When women are involved in negotiations, peace agreements are 20% more likely to last at least two years and 35% more likely to last at least 15 years. Yet women are largely excluded from peace and reconciliation processes. So how can women participate in these processes? Women-led civil society organizations and groups are often the primary avenue for women to have their say in peacebuilding, yet these organizations tend to be underfunded and fragmented. Discover key lessons for effectively supporting local women-led organizations and increasing their access to decision-making and recommendations on how donors, international implementers, and governments can support equitable partnerships to increase programming impact and durability in our issue brief! 🔗 Read the issue brief here: https://lnkd.in/e6ie7ccE

We are proud to join 70 organisations from across the globe and diverse sectors in launching a unified call for increased funding for global development and climate action in the next long-term EU budget (#MFF) for 2028–2034. With crises like conflict, climate change, inequality, pandemics, and humanitarian challenges worsening, the EU must prioritize increased funding for development, humanitarian assistance, climate action, and conflict prevention. Why it matters: 🔹The interconnected challenges of climate change, conflict, and pandemics threaten global stability and equity. 🔹 Investing in preparedness, climate adaptation, and resilience saves lives and prevents future crises. 🔹A rights-based, sustainable approach will address root causes of fragility and forced displacement. International partners are welcome to participate and will gain access to regular briefings, insights, and opportunities to take action. 📢 Join us! Let’s work together to secure an ambitious #EUBudget! 🔗 http://www.mffhub.org

This December, as the U.S. takes the presidency of the UN Security Council, Women, Peace, and Security are at the forefront. Yesterday, Sudanese activist and Search for Common Ground partner Tahani Abbas addressed the UNSC, emphasizing the vital role of women in peacebuilding. Tahani shared her insights on supporting women in dialogue processes and ensuring their participation before, during, and after crises. Let’s amplify her call to action: protect and support women on the frontlines, invest in women peacebuilders, and partner with young women to shape a peaceful future for Sudan. Discover some of the key outcomes from COP29 in our latest video 👇 During this year’s COP, we worked with peer NGOs to integrate peace into the climate agenda. While we made some progress, challenges remain. Looking toward COP30, we must continue to prioritize approaches that go beyond just reducing emissions to actions that also help foster peace, as addressing these shared challenges together will be key to creating solutions that last.
