On August 6, 2011, a Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter was shot down while transporting a quick reaction force team attempting to reinforce an engaged unit of Army Rangers in Wardak province, Afghanistan. The resulting crash killed all 38 people on board the helicopter, including 17 United States Navy SEALs. Extortion 17 is considered the worst loss of American lives in a single incident from the Afghanistan campaign. It also served as a major reason behind the creation of the SEAL Legacy Foundation as a resource to help support the families. Today, we honor the service, memory and LEGACY of the men who gave the ultimate sacrifice that day. #NoOneLeftBehind #NoOneForgotten 🇺🇸
