Empowering Families Through Financial Literacy On November 14, 2024, the San Diego Center for Economics Education (SDCEE) hosted a Family Financial Fun Night at Kempton Literacy Academy in Spring Valley, CA, where families came together for fun, hands-on activities focused on financial literacy. The evening featured four interactive financial literacy stations: Earning Power: Helping participants understand the connection between education, career choices, and income potential. Savings and Me: Highlighting the importance of setting goals and saving for the future. Planning for a Pet: Using budgeting for pet ownership to teach about recurring and unexpected expenses. Needs and Wants: Exploring how to differentiate essential spending from discretionary items for better budgeting. Janet Nellys Josa, Principal of Kempton Literacy Academy, a dual-language immersion school, kicked off the evening with a warm welcome in both English and Spanish, creating an inclusive environment for all attendees. While children explored the stations, parents and guardians participated in a financial literacy session, gaining valuable tools to manage their finances. A heartfelt thank you to the dedicated SDCEE Advisory Board members Rickeena Boyd Kamei, John H. Parker, and Louis Lange, as well as North Island Credit Union volunteers Shadi Poustchi and Summer Yousif, for their leadership and support. A special shout-out to Kempton's new Community Schools Facilitator, Pauline Jimenez. Jeanie M. Machado Tyler, Vice President of Instruction at Cuyamaca College, led an activity and distributed bookbags with age-appropriate materials from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, as well as Cuyamaca College and Grossmont College branded merchandise—helping reinforce the importance of higher education. Certificates of participation, generously provided by Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe, were presented to children and their parents/guardians, recognizing their commitment to building brighter, financially secure futures. This event highlighted the power of community collaboration in fostering financial literacy and empowering families for a stronger tomorrow. #FinancialLiteracy #CommunityImpact #EducationMatters #SDCEE California Council on Economic Education Council for Economic Education
