About us
SCAPE is a design-driven landscape architecture and urban design studio based in New York, New Orleans, and San Francisco. We believe landscape architecture can enable positive change in communities through the creation of regenerative living infrastructure and public landscapes. We work to integrate natural cycles and systems into environments across all scales, from the urban pocket-park to the regional ecological plan. We do this through diverse forms of landscape architecture – built landscapes, planning frameworks, research, books, and installations – with the ultimate goal of connecting people to their immediate environment and creating dynamic and adaptive landscapes of the future. Our staff is experienced in landscape architecture, architecture, urban design, and planning, and we integrate these skillsets to practice design as interpreters and synthetic thinkers. We lead and work with teams of engineers and architects on complex projects, from stormwater streetscapes to large public pedestrian infrastructure, translating technical expertise into legible and engaging public space. We also believe in working with communities and stakeholders to translate complex visions into realizable actions. We work with clients to ensure that design concept remains intact through the process of building landscapes. To achieve solid, high-performance public urban landscapes, we combine new technologies with tried and true construction techniques. We aim to create public landscapes of lasting significance, reconnecting neighborhood infrastructure and habitats for generations to come. Our work and collaborations have led to several national awards, including the Buckminster Fuller Challenge Winner, two national American Society of Landscape Architects awards, and several NY American Society of Landscape Architects Awards. In 2017, founder and principal Kate Orff was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow, and in 2019 SCAPE was awarded the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award.

In 2012, floodwaters from Superstorm Sandy "mangled shoreline houses and swept into the low-lying streets of Tottenville and other towns," writes James S. Russell, FAIA in Bloomberg CityLab. "The piles of stones before me represent an innovative $111 million effort to make sure that disaster does not repeat itself. Called Living Breakwaters, it’s a network of artificial reefs designed to shatter future storm surge waves, reducing their damaging height and momentum. Every stone of Living Breakwaters — 2,400 linear feet — has been carefully shaped and positioned. The spaces between the reefs were calibrated to so that floodwaters would not get trapped inside, while waves pushing around them would collide with each other, depriving them of energy." By foot and by kayak, equipped with underwater microphones and waterproof recording equipment, SCAPE Associate Andrew Wright listened to the wetlands, waves, parks, and neighborhoods of Jamaica Bay. As part of SCAPE’s second annual SEED research grant program, Andrew spent a week collecting more than six hours of field recordings. Drawing on his training as both a musician and a landscape architect, he used these recordings to create an original audio composition that illuminates the physical, ecological, and infrastructural juxtapositions that define the Bay. Andrew’s interdisciplinary project engages active, creative listening as an alternative strategy to document landscapes and inspires new possibilities for incorporating sound into the design process. Malt Drive Park in Long Island City, Queens is now open to the public! Named for the former beer distribution center that once occupied the site, Malt Drive Park is a key piece in a network of waterfront spaces along the East River and Newtown Creek in Hunter's Point South. The park features a range of amenities for parkgoers to enjoy, including social seating and play structures, a civic grove and dog run, an open lawn with expansive views of the water, and industrial artifacts reclaimed during construction. Through its sculpted topography, Malt Drive Park also mitigates flood risk. The park is raised to a higher elevation at building entries, and gradually slopes down toward Newtown Creek. This approach reduces risk to the buildings, while ensuring that visitors can still experience the ecology of the water’s edge. 📷: Ty Cole Client: TF Cornerstone Collaborators: SLCE Architects, Rossenwasser / Grossman Consulting Engineers, Cosentini Associates, Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers, Philip Habib and Associates, F2 Environmental, Hines Inc

Manresa Island, a former industrial power plant site in Connecticut, is transforming into a 125-acre thriving and accessible park designed by SCAPE. The park unlocks 1.75 miles of Norwalk's waterfront access for the first time in nearly 75 years. Manresa Island holds centuries of history and ecological significance. For 60 years, it was home to a power plant that caused significant ecological concerns. Today, the island has grown to over 125 acres due to industrial fill and is undergoing a natural resurgence, with thriving ecosystems and rich biodiversity. SCAPE's design for the park includes water access, public swimming, playspace, recreational and ecological experiences, and a network of new walking paths. The plan incorporates remediation strategies that will revive Manresa’s coastal ecosystems and preserve its post-industrial landscapes. This one-of-a-kind park is advanced by the non-profit organization Manresa Island Corp. Beginning in early 2025, SCAPE and Manresa Island Corp. will guide a community engagement process to advance a design that prioritizes sustainability, resilience and dynamic ecological design.
