OUR MISSION Every 15 seconds a child dies from lack of access to clean water. Save the Rain teaches water-starved communities in East Africa to use rain as a sustainable water supply, stopping the needless deaths caused by the Global Water Crisis. To achieve our mission, we educate communities to harvest the rain through roof water collection, surface water collection, and groundwater recharge. We educate recipients on the importance of reforestation, sanitation, hygiene, and sustainable agriculture through permaculture design. Our systems are built from local materials by a community elected local workforce. They require no electricity, pumping, or filtration, thus assuring sustainability. We are Save the Rain because saving rain saves lives. #rainwaterharvesting #cleanwaterforall #womenempowerment #savetherain

December is a magical month of renewal and vitality. In Tanzania, rain washes in, heralding fresh starts and new life – and we begin the month with our birthday, celebrating 19 years of catching blessings from the sky. Since we entered their lives nearly two decades ago, the women we serve have become mothers and grandmothers. We have witnessed the transformation in the life they bring their daughters into, and it has got us thinking about generational change. Our birthday gift to you is Elizabeth’s story – a lens through which we tell the tale of how water ripples across a mother’s life, and out across daughters and daughters to come. https://lnkd.in/gbhFscGK

Looking back at 2024: A note from our executive director In Swahili, vumilia means to endure, abide, tolerate, and be patient. But the word has a broader indication – to suffer alone. In Tanzania and worldwide, women learn to face their pain in silence and carry burdens alone. Does it breed strength and perseverance? Or does it cement the perpetuation of struggle? I believe the answer is both. In one of my favorite Star Wars movies, the following words are spoken: “The empire wants us to believe we are alone in the dark. That’s how they win.” No matter what language you speak or what place you call home, when we stand together, there isn’t anything we can’t overcome. A new gravel quarry was built in a region where one of our women’s teams is building rainwater tanks and greenhouses. While excavating the earth, it broke into the government water line. No one intends to fix it. The water delivered by this pipe was so highly contaminated with fluoride that it was toxic. But compared to the 13-hour walk for water, people relied on it—even if there was no consistency in the delivery. On most of the homes where rainwater harvesting tanks were built, ten new women would arrive every day begging for water. The homes with tanks are sharing their water, knowing they are depleting their supply. But they rely on the faith that the more they share the gift the rain has given them, the more the rain will continue to shower down. This tells us that the tanks have become vessels to stop suffering alone. It also drives home the need for more systems to be built on more homes because a decentralized water system is the only answer. We are deeply thankful to share this journey with these brave, resilient women and, through your generosity, build a bridge away from vumilia and the need to suffer in solitude. Together, with donors like you, we can continue to create solutions that ensure no one is left alone in the dark. Your support is the cornerstone in this collective hope, and for that, we are eternally grateful. With immense thanks, Kelly Coleman Save the Rain Executive Director https://lnkd.in/gTz5mJFQ

The word gratitude comes from ‘gratis’ – Latin for ‘free’. We love that gratitude, at its root, springs from that which is given freely. Picture how freely rain falls: it is Nature’s gift of abundance. That we can catch it is also made possible by what is given freely. The generosity of our supporters make it rain in once sense. This allows us, in turn, to harvest the abundance that showers down. Saving the rain feels like the truest recognition of Nature’s generous giving. Our gratitude has its roots in the very same source. From families, to the women who make their living from this work; to the generations who will never want for water… our gratitude ripples out from every drop that falls. We have you to thank for that. Please know that on this Thanksgiving, we give thanks for you. With gratitude, The Save the Rain Team

How 30 Seconds and the WASH Curriculum Save Lives When children are born into water scarcity, basic hygiene measures like handwashing are an unaffordable luxury. Water- and sanitation-related diseases, despite being preventable, remain one of the most significant child health problems worldwide. Diarrhea is the most devastating, killing over 3,000 children each day. 88% of diarrheal disease is attributed to unsafe drinking water, inadequate sanitation, and poor hygiene. Even when waterborne disease doesn’t kill, it still costs children days of education, crucial brain and body development, and precious family funds in medical care. Building rainwater harvesting systems on primary schools is how that changes. Not only does it introduce a shift from scarcity to sufficiency, but we capitalize on the educational potential with our WASH curriculum, teaching children about Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene. #wash #water #health https://lnkd.in/gdcgqWgp

💧Congratulations to the winner of our Water Management category: “Water for Students” - Roshni Lodhia for Save the Rain About the photo: “As climate change and deforestation interrupt rain patterns, innovative water management systems like this water harvesting tank need to be put in place to ensure villages have access to clean water during the dry season. This water storage tank harvests rainwater from Mt. Meru, providing clean water for students at Upendo Primary School during the dry season in Northern Tanzania.”
