For today’s #30DayMapChallenge (the final map), I took a slightly different approach to analyzing food deserts. First, instead of looking at "all grocery stores," I classified SafeGraph Places data into three groups and assigned weights to indicate the likelihood of the place offering food for at-home consumption: 1.) Grocery stores, supermarkets, or large convenience stores. Weight = 3 2.) Discount/dollar stores with some array of food products, specialty food marts (like meat markets), etc. Weight = 2 3.) Gas stations and small convenience stores offering at least snacks or small packaged foods. Weight = 1 *Note: Restaurants, cafes, bars, etc. are excluded from food desert analyses. Our goal is to infer access to food for at-home consumption only. I then summed the weighted scores by county and divided by the county population (as reported by the US Census) to arrive at estimated food access per county normalized by population. A food desert analysis by administrative boundary overlooks the fact that populations may live on the border of a county where it's only a short drive to food in a neighboring county, but it still highlights large swaths of low vs. high access and raises the question of government programs/policy at the county level. Check out the results of this approach in Virginia, and happy mapping! https://lnkd.in/gjMjpbRm
