Rock Leaf ecologist Ellysa Johnson joined our team in the spring and led the effort to develop an enhancement framework consisting of surveys and management action flowcharts for the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR). These materials were officially launched in October and will assist Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) employees in determining the eligibility of Reinvest in Minnesota (RIM) easements for funding through the General Fund and help define enhancement strategies to create a more resilient landscape. On Saturday, several employees at Rock Leaf participated in the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center's (MAISRC) annual Starry Trek! Volunteers from across the state surveyed lakes for aquatic invasive species, including starry stonewort. This year, Rock Leaf's Shelly Binsfeld and survey partner identified a living golden clam (Corbicula fluminea) on Eagle Lake in Sherburne County. This is a curious find, given the clam's sensitivity to cold temperatures. This invasive species is typically found in areas with supplemental heat sources, such as nearby power plants; its identification in inland lakes suggests it may be surviving mild winters in Minnesota. This species causes effects similar to those of the invasive zebra mussel, with infestations clogging pipes and altering local ecosystems. Citizen scientists, such as Starry Trek volunteers, have aided MAISRC and the DNR in critical research over the years. Next time you are at the lake, challenge yourself to try and identify the nearby plants and animals-- who knows, your observations could be the first! #RockLeaf #Water #StarryTrek #DNR #MAISRC #AIS #Environmental #Excellence
