Former President Jimmy Carter passed away this week at the age of 100, after nearly two years in hospice care. As families care for aging loved ones, many may be hesitant to discuss end of life care plans due to common myths around hospice. Alan Varnson, Director of Growth Development for Riverside at Home, spoke with WTKR News 3 to emphasize that hospice isn’t just about the end of life — it’s about ensuring comfort and independence, allowing people to live their lives to the fullest.

🎄 Day 11 of our 12 Days of Caring! 🎄 Today, we’re spotlighting Tina Beierly, RN, a Champion of Caring from our Corporate Services Division. The Champions of Caring program recognizes Riverside team members whose extraordinary acts of kindness truly make a difference. Tina’s story is one of many that inspire us during this season of gratitude. One morning, this Tina sprang into action without a moment's hesitation, coming to the aid of an outpatient who had taken a tumble on the sidewalk and was injured. She selflessly guided both the patient and her husband, accompanying them to their doctor's office and ensuring they safely reached their vehicle for the trip to the Emergency Department. Despite the husband's understandable distress, Tina’s comforting presence managed to soothe his anxieties. Her unwavering dedication went beyond the call of duty, exemplifying the Riverside mission of caring for others as we would care for those we love.

🎄 Day 10 of our 12 Days of Caring 🎄 For over 10 years, Riverside’s iCare team has been spreading joy and kindness during the holiday season, making the holidays brighter for residents at Warwick Forest Rehabilitation Center. This year, the iCare team once again created gift bags for 20 residents without family visitors, ensuring they feel loved and remembered during the holidays. Each gift bag was filled with thoughtful items, including non-slip socks, blankets, candy, word game books, ChapSticks, hand lotions, and hand sanitizers. In addition, residents received a game designed to assist dementia patients with their cognitive skills, adding an extra layer of care and thoughtfulness to this year’s gifts. Through these acts of kindness, we’re reminded of the power of compassion and community. 💝

🎄 Day 9 of 12 Days of Caring 🎄 What if a vending machine could save a life? 💚 At Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital (RSMH), this isn’t just a question—it’s a reality. Instead of sodas or snacks, their new safety-focused vending machine available 24/7 offers free resources like gun locks and fentanyl test strips to support harm reduction and prevent a potential tragedy in the community. Through a partnership with the Community Services Board, RSMH is making support accessible when it’s needed most. This innovative tool is part of our commitment to fostering a healthier, safer future for everyone. 💝 Let’s celebrate the incredible work being done to bring hope and safety to our neighbors.

🎄 Day 7 of our 12 Days of Caring! 🎄 The holiday spirit is shinning bright at Riverside Mental Health & Recovery Center (RMHRC) through their Annual Angel Tree Drive! 🎁 This heartfelt tradition brings joy to patients who are unable to be home for the holidays, ensuring they receive something special during this meaningful season. Thanks to the generosity of our incredible team members, the Angel Tree is adorned with tags representing much-needed items for our patients. Team members have chosen tags and donated with open hearts, embodying the true meaning of teamwork and holiday spirit. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to making the holidays brighter for our patients. Together, we’re showing that care and compassion are the greatest gifts of all. ❤️

Jennifer Campbell-Raab, a registered nurse with Riverside Mental Health and Recovery Center, recently shared insights with 13News Now (WVEC) about the holiday blues, including the key signs to watch for.

🎄 Day 6 of our 12 Days of Caring 🎄 Step behind the scenes with Kanisha Marshall, RN, as she brings warmth and compassionate care to the guests at the PORT Winter Shelter program. Through our partnership with LINK of Hampton Roads and the City of Newport News Kanisha provides essential health care services to shelter guests, including health screenings for flu and COVID-19, care for minor illnesses, and referrals for additional health care support if needed. Kanisha’s work is a powerful reminder that small moments of care can make a big difference. Behind the scenes, it’s people like her who bring Riverside’s mission to life—creating healthier, more connected communities, one person at a time. 💚
