  • Medetomidine, a sedative 100 times more potent than xylazine, is now appearing in the illicit drug supply. Originally used in veterinary medicine for its strong sedative and pain-relieving effects, its misuse is creating dangerous health risks—especially when mixed with fentanyl or other opioids. Awareness is key to staying safe in the face of this growing threat.

  • This week, Recovery Centers of America announced the launch of Recovery Living at its Devon location. This transitional housing option is designed to offer patients a comfortable, safe and seamless progression from inpatient treatment to a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP).   Recovery Living provides a supportive, structured environment for individuals stepping down from inpatient to PHP who need local housing to make the step-down. This multi-week transitional housing option offers clinical care with a structured living environment to support long-term recovery. The housing option provides a sober, home-like atmosphere where residents can focus on their recovery, share meals and participate in group activities that foster a sense of mutual support between patients and staff.   “Recovery is a lifelong journey that doesn’t end after inpatient care. So this housing option was designed to support patients as they transition to everyday life and at every stage in the future,” said Kevin Pannone, Interim CEO at RCA at Devon. “By blending clinical care with community support, we ensure that each step they take reinforces their progress, helping individuals build the foundation they need for lasting recovery.”

  • Professionals in Recovery Spotlight: Jeff, Product Manager at RCA's Enterprise Support Center. "A few weeks ago, I celebrated 8 years of continuous sobriety, and I’m grateful for that and for the opportunity to share a bit about it here. Everything positive in my life today is directly attributable to recovery. Not unlike many of those we serve at Recovery Centers of America (RCA), my road to recovery has been anything but smooth. Even after formal treatment in 2013, it took three more of the most challenging years of my life before I finally stabilized in 2016. Sustainable recovery is a complete lifestyle and mindset overhaul—and that kind of transformation takes time. It certainly did for me. In the early days and months, it’s easy to get so focused on substances or destructive behaviors that we forget they were just coping mechanisms, albeit maladaptive ones, for deeper issues. Real change only happens once we accept and address those underlying struggles. I first learned about Recovery Centers of America through people who had received treatment there. I joined RCA a little over three years ago, working in the IT department, and I’m still here today. In my role, I focus on providing technical solutions that directly improve patient care and support the recovery journey. I work across all the various teams to support their technical needs and ensure our systems effectively meet their goals. Everything I do aims to make care more accessible and frictionless, allowing patients and staff to focus on what matters most—recovery. There is much pain in the world, and there are so many people in need of quality care. I bring this awareness into my work every day, constantly asking myself, “How might this impact someone actively suffering from addiction or newly on the road to recovery?” I believe that those of us seeking recovery are some of the greatest people out there, and we all deserve more than just abstinence—we deserve the opportunity to thrive for the rest of our lives. As someone deeply involved in this world, I put my own recovery first. RCA understands and supports this, and there’s never been a time when my employment conflicted with my #1 responsibility: to stay sober and be of maximum service to my family and my community. Without that, everything else falls apart. I take pride in staying behind the scenes in this role, knowing that my work contributes to someone else’s recovery. It’s my north star, keeping me focused and moving forward, even when the work gets tough. To anyone still struggling, I want you to know that there is hope, and there’s no such thing as “too far gone.” Everyone can recover, lives can improve, families can come together, and the lens of despair that might cloud your vision today can eventually lift. Life can and will get better. In some ways, these eight years feel like a lifetime, and in other ways, I know this is just the beginning. Onward and upward."

  • Professionals in Recovery Spotlight: During Matt's first year in recovery, he experienced pain that gradually escalated into severe discomfort, eventually making it difficult for him to walk. He sought medical help and was diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis—a condition caused by a lack of blood supply to the bones, which had led to the deterioration of both of his hips. The doctors informed him that his only option was a double hip replacement. At just 34 years old, Matt had no idea that alcohol misuse could lead to losing both of his hips. In August 2020, he underwent surgery to replace both hips during the same operation. This experience was a significant turning point in Matt's recovery journey. For the first time in his life, he faced severe pain that required prescription medication for relief. Knowing his history of addiction, he approached this necessity with caution. He was open with his doctor about his struggles and they devised a plan to manage his pain safely. He took the medication exactly as prescribed, monitoring the times he took each dose, which was typically every four to six hours—though it often felt closer to every four. Matt was determined not to run out of his medication before he could get a refill. During this time, his mother offered support, and while she didn’t monitor his medication, she helped him navigate his recovery. He also attended daily meetings, sharing his concerns about managing pain medication without relapsing. The people in his support group cautioned him to stick strictly to his prescription, reinforcing the importance of accountability. As Matt worked through his recovery, he was acutely aware of how close he was to losing everything. He was coming off his fifth time in rehab, sick of relapsing, and fearful of what the future held if he didn’t stay sober. After two months of intense physical therapy, Matt regained the ability to walk normally again. Today, he’s able to live an active life with very few restrictions, and is has over 5 years in recovery. Though he now sets off metal detectors and carries a few more scars, he’s discovered something far more valuable: Even when the damage feels irreversible, recovery still offers a way forward.
