A team of researchers from the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering and the UC San Diego #qualcomminstitute is helping robots level up. Their work on 3D reconstruction, human-#robot interaction and planning and control has set the stage for robots to take over the dirtiest, dullest and most dangerous jobs in the construction industry. “The work that we’re doing now means that a single operator can remotely operate several robots who can perform those tasks in a more safe, efficient and convenient manner,” says UC San Diego Electrical and Computer Engineering faculty member Truong Nguyen, who worked with #ucsd colleague Nikolay Atanasov on the research. https://lnkd.in/gCBWx66f

Harnessing technology to jumpstart innovation across disciplines
About us
The Qualcomm Institute is the UC San Diego division of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2), one of four Gray Davis Institutes for Science and Innovation located on University of California campuses. As a nonprofit research and educational organization, QI brings together more than 350 faculty members, nearly 120 technical and professional staff on the UC San Diego campus, as well as hundreds of student workers, undergraduate scholars, graduate fellows, postdoctoral researchers, project and research scientists, and nearly 200 industry partners to date. The institute’s strategic vision stresses collaborative, interdisciplinary research in four core areas to benefit society: culture, energy, the environment, and health. QI also prototypes and builds enabling technologies (wireless, photonics, cyberinfrastructure, and nano-micro-electromechanical systems, or nano-MEMS). In addition, the institute plays a leading role in the development of new institutes and research centers for the UC San Diego campus, on topics ranging from robotics and the brain to design.

A new study in JAMA Internal Medicine from scientists at #ucsd, UC San Diego School of Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University and University of Michigan Medical School examines the practices of crisis pregnancy centers, non-profit organizations with an anti-abortion agenda. “While our study shows crisis pregnancy centers provide valuable community services, like parenting classes, there is a clear need for consumer safety measures to prevent the promotion and use of their questionable medical services,” said John W. Ayers, Ph.D., who is deputy director of informatics at the UC San Diego Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute, in addition to scientist at UC San Diego’s #qualcomminstitute and co-creator of ChoiceWatch.org. It was a pleasure to host University of California - Alianza MX at the #qualcomminstitute 's Atkinson Hall. Thanks for taking an interest in connecting with us and what we do!
Embassy in Mexico. At the opening of Gallery QI show "Three Lives," artists spoke how three early women oceanographers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography inspired their pieces. "When I see these images now all over the place, it’s exciting because I think that they are women [who] were invisible and now they’re highly visible, and it’s through the medium of drawing,” said artist Amy Adler. The show at #ucsd #qualcomminstitute's Gallery QI, part of a wider exhibition sponsored by Birch Aquarium at Scripps and UC San Diego Visual Arts Department, is open from noon to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, until December 6. The next era in data collection is here — and it doesn’t have to be expensive. A new paper from Ph.D. student Nagarjun Bhat and the lab of UC San Diego Computer Science and Engineering Department (CSE) faculty member and #ucsd #qualcomminstitute affiliate Dinesh Bharadia proves that not only is battery-free sensing possible, it can be done at little cost. The research was presented this week at an ACM, Association for Computing Machinery conference. Read more at: https://lnkd.in/gdznN57n
