Empowering future engineers to accomplish global sustainability
About us
The Environmental and Ecological Engineering (EEE) program at Purdue launches a modern approach to environmental engineering. Rather than only considering conventional waste emission treatment, we want our students to approach problems from an integrated perspective that considers both environmental and ecological aspects. We chose the unusual name Environmental and Ecological Engineering because it is important to highlight unique aspects of the program and unique approaches of EEE relative to similar programs at peer institutions. We seek a broad systems perspective for addressing environmental issues, with a focus on ecological interactions and resilient designs that take into account complexity and connectivity between systems. In the undergraduate curriculum, this philosophy drives the early focus on systems thinking and understanding.

EEE Graduate students presented and networked at the American Water Works Association (AWWA)’s Water Quality Technology Conference (WQTC) in Schaumburg, Illinois last month. EEE PhD student Aliya Ehde and master’s students Daniel Ceglio and Stephanie Heffner shared their experiences at the conference and how it made an impact on them and their studies. Read more: https://bit.ly/AWWA_WQTC "It felt exciting to share my research with people who were uniquely knowledgeable and passionate about my topic. I was pleasantly surprised with the questions I was asked by the audience and was even approached by a few people afterward to have more in-depth conversations about my work.” - Aliya Ehde “Going to this conference gave me the opportunity to meet others who do similar work. This gave me new ideas for future research projects, while also making connections to others who may be able to help me with my research.” - Daniel Ceglio “Dr. .Andrew Whelton. introduced me to people he's worked with, and I got to connect with more people who work at the consulting firm that I'll be working at after graduation.” - Stephanie Heffner

It is wonderful to welcome EEE alumni back to the Purdue campus! Thank you Madison Hodges for sharing your experiences and inspiring our students. #boilerup
Always love returning to my alma mater to share my early career experiences in the climate space! This time around, I had the pleasure of sharing the lectern with City of West Lafayette and City of Lafayette sustainability practitioners (and friends of ICLEI USA!). Every job is a climate job — especially when it comes to engineering. Kudos to Purdue University College of Engineering for providing the space for freshmen to understand key climate science + mitigation topics early in their education! Boiler up!

Last month, EEE PhD student Kanaan Hardaway delivered a lecture to Purdue EEE students on urban vegetation’s impact on cooling demand and human health. "My research focuses on contextualizing the impacts of vegetation on human wellbeing within the social-ecological-technological systems known as cities. My presentation focused on two studies that explore connections from vegetation to cooling demand and human health. Through these studies, I’ve found that the impacts of vegetation in urban areas are nuanced socially, technically, and climatically. In future projects, I hope to continue to clarify how the quantity and quality of urban vegetation affects human livelihoods and wellbeing in cities now and in the future."
