  • In 2016, the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) issued guidance on broad criminal history prohibitions in tenant selections. Landlords who conduct criminal record screening should apply HUD’s guidance and avoid blanket bans on renting to anyone with a criminal history and/or conducting inconsistent background screenings. A housing provider should also consider individuals on a case-by-case basis, including the nature of each criminal offense and length of time that has passed since the crime was committed. To learn more about your fair housing rights visit our website to access the Fair Housing Toolkit for people with Criminal Records https://lnkd.in/guhVrPVh or call Project Sentinel at (888) 324-7468 for assistance.

  • November 20th, 2024, marks Transgender Day of Remembrance, where we honor all the transgender people who are no longer with us due to acts of anti-transgender violence. Transgender Awareness Week is a time for us to educate and reflect on Transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming resilience, including how our allyship can shape long lasting efforts towards trans rights. The Fair Housing Act protects LBGTQIA+ individuals against discrimination in housing. Signs of discrimination include, refusing to rent to a transgender person, steering potential applicants away or to other housing, charging higher rent, or harassment because of someone’s gender or sexual orientation. If you or anyone you know is experiencing discrimination on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation, contact your local Fair Housing agency. Call Project Sentinel at (888) 324-7468 for help.
