About us
For over 50 years, Prein&Newhof has been meeting infrastructure needs for township, municipal, and private clients across West Michigan. We offer a wide range of engineering, environmental consulting, surveying, GIS, and laboratory services. At P&N, our single goal is to serve our clients – meeting their infrastructure needs with a combination of experience, integrity, creativity, and common sense. Because every situation is different, we put a high value on personal attention. And because needs change over time, we are dedicated to crafting flexible, long-term solutions rather than quick fixes. Begun by Tom Newhof and Ed Prein in 1969, P&N was founded on the belief that each engineer should take personal responsibility for meeting his or her clients’ needs – building long-term relationships and managing each project from start to finish, from preliminary design to final construction. Today, we are the engineer of choice for over 50 communities across West Michigan. Today Prein&Newhof is 100% employee-owned, with offices in Grand Rapids, Cadillac, Holland, Muskegon, Traverse City, Kalamazoo, and an Environmental Laboratory in Grand Rapids. Today marks the 25th Annual Global GIS Day – a chance to celebrate how Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has evolved over the years into an everyday, essential tool for supporting communities. Ask someone to define GIS, and you’ll receive a variety of answers. Most people have encountered GIS through things like navigation apps, election maps, and COVID dashboards. While visualizing and analyzing data on a map might be the most familiar way to think about GIS, the technology continues to evolve as innovative tools emerge and as users find creative new ways to use it. Read more about the history of GIS, Prein&Newhof's GIS experience, and ways you can interact with GIS on our blog: https://lnkd.in/g69BTnuE #GISday #gisday2024 #MappingTheFuture #GIS #seeingfarther

It's almost National Stormwater Day! In 1990, November 16 was a defining day for the stormwater sector as the Federal Register announced the first phase of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) stormwater program. Today, designing efficient stormwater management infrastructure with NPDES requirements in mind is crucial to protecting communities and the environment from pollutants. On November 12, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is hosting a webinar highlighting EGLE’s programs to manage stormwater for the protection of surface water quality in Michigan. It will include presentations from EGLE’s Nonpoint Source, Industrial Stormwater, Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System, Construction Stormwater, and Combined Sewer Overflow programs followed by a question-and-answer session. Anyone interested in the management of stormwater for the protection of surface waters in Michigan is invited to attend! Learn more and register for the webinar here: https://lnkd.in/gNBYwrk8 #nationalstormwaterday #stormwaterday #stormwatermanagement #CleanWater #engineering #seeingfarther

Congratulations to the City of Walker on this successful groundbreaking ceremony for a new community library! We're honored to be a part of this project and are looking forward to seeing how this library creates connections and builds community for years to come.
Today, we broke ground on the new library that will sit on the campus of City Hall. A library that will be a beacon of learning, literacy, and community spirit! This significant day has been years in the making. Input and feedback from you - our community - were vital in bringing us to where we are today. We are creating more than just a library; we are fostering a stronger, more connected community and investing in our people and their potential. Thank you to Kent District Library, Owen-Ames-Kimball Co., Prein&Newhof, and Studio GC architecture+interiors. Look for library progress updates in the coming weeks.

Congratulations to Plainfield Charter Township for the successful groundbreaking ceremony at Grand Rogue Park! Following the purchase of the property in 2018, this major park development project aims to improve accessibility and provide traditional park amenities with an emphasis on environmental sustainability. The park’s improvements will include a paved access drive, new parking facilities, accessible sidewalks, a picnic pavilion, a barrier-free fishing overlook, playground equipment, and two ADA-accessible kayak/canoe launch docks to both the Rogue River and the man-made lake adjacent to the south parking lot. Following Lower Grand River Organization of Watersheds (LGROW) standards, rain gardens and bioswales will be used to improve stormwater management and natural shoreline restoration will be provided along a portion of the Rogue River. The vision for the project stems directly from community input through the Township’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan update. Public hearings invited residents to have a voice in shaping the park’s future, creating expanded recreational opportunities for generations to come! With experience supporting developers in both rural and metropolitan communities, our site development team specializes in navigating complex regulations and ensuring projects meet the needs of both developers and residents. New developments and site improvements build the economy and help communities grow, but new sites also need to fit into existing communities. We’re proud to have played a key role in transforming the once-empty parking lot at 10 Ionia Avenue NW into a vibrant, mixed-use development in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids’ historic district. This 13-story, 140,000-square-foot project, developed by The Hinman Company and designed by Yamasaki Architecture, is now home to 147 suites at the Residence Inn by Marriott and 5,000 square feet of street-level retail space. Our team provided essential site design and landscape architecture services, including street lighting and sidewalk design, curb alignment and right-of-way determination, integration of a new DASH bus stop and bicycle parking, and certification of construction compliance with city standards. The development is a testament to how thoughtful design can transform a space and enrich the community!
