The picture is of my Afghan Goddaughter, just one of the best things to come from Afghanistan. Her Mom and Dad, continue to do quite a lot for Afghanistan, both here and abroad, while being very good role models for their young daughter. Her mom is very focused on education for Afghan women, and her Dad, who was a hard fighting Afghan Special Forces junior leader, continues to bring Afghans together to solve problems. “Experience is a good teacher, though her fees are very high”—-seen on a whiteboard at a Shields & Stripes activity. This quote feels quite appropriate as we reach the 3d anniversary of our departure from Afghanistan. Many participants(veterans, civilians, diplomats) of the Afghan conflict, still struggle today with the effort and, of course, the ending. I’ve often been asked my thoughts— and quite frankly I’m reluctant to discuss too widely, one because it remains too raw, and let’s face it, it’s a tough topic in a political season, where the focus is more on blame, than on lessons. However, I also know that there were positive experiences throughout the near 20 year war, and that continues today. I personally have witnessed some incredibly positive, and heroic efforts, but today they are outweighed by the outcome. While I haven’t spoken to the Afghan War Commission, I’m told it’s a serious look at the lessons learned over the course of our involvement. And that’s where we need to be. In the interim 1) I’ve observed Afghans standing up, raising families, certainly with necessary assistance. 2) People helping them navigate a complicated immigration process. 3) Some Afghans are beginning to enter the work force in a meaningful way, more work is needed here. 4) We are still getting Afghan Partners to the United States and other countries, albeit painfully slow, but it is happening. 5) And importantly, we continue to honor our fallen, ensuring they are not forgotten. So while there is still much to be done, my approach and recommendation is to focus on the solutions to our front, while paying attention to the lessons learned over the years—the price for those lessons was very high. • There's nothing like some Special Operations-inspired shooting and watching the sunset with good friends! Thank you to all who came out for our Shoot with SOF Class 002. Guests learned from former Operators how to use some of the same SIG SAUER, Inc. firearms systems that they used in combat. We also went beyond the gun and were treated to thought-provoking remarks by our Executive Chairman Scott Miller about the current state of global affairs. From the Middle East conflict to the Russia Ukraine War to China and chip making, our boss has unique insight that very few possess. And we all got a great book recommendation - Dmitri Alperovitch's & Garrett M. Graff"s "World on the Brink." The day ended with some Whiskey & War Stories in the team room, complete with how Horse Soldier Bourbon was founded - and where you can find Scott Neil on every 9/11. 🇺🇸 If you're interested in a Special Operations-inspired experience or our leadership development program - please reach out! Russian Drone Plant that could shape the War in Ukraine This article came out at the end of May, and I’ve been thinking about it since. A drone plant that uses 1) Iranian technology, 2) Chinese components 3) cheap labor from East Africa 4) and a logistics network “that Iran honed during a years long standoff with the West”, which means illicit and tough to stop. Then to top it off, the capability is being adapted to a very challenging EW environment and being tested in combat everyday. I’ve drawn a couple of conclusions from this. 1. We may or may not go “head to head” against Russia and/or Iran, but we have to anticipate that these UAS systems will proliferate the battlefield through proxies (they actually already have). 2. They will continue to iterate and build on this capability. 3. Our forces have already had to contend with this threat and we’ve lost service members and infrastructure to this threat. 4. Russia (and Iran) have already scaled to industrial level or wartime production. These will get cheaper and the technology will evolve. 5. For a lesson from the past, it’s worthwhile to look at the advent of the tank, radars and other innovations in the inter war years (WWI-WWII). Some moved out on the capability and others didn’t believe it would be sufficiently decisive, or for economic reasons held off, and ultimately had to catch up after suffering some terrible losses early in WWII. 6. August Cole pointed out the satellite image came from Maxaar, which informs us on the importance of commercial capabilities beyond Ukraine. 7. The side that possesses the offensive capability with the proper integration are going to be formidable at least at the tactical and operational level of the fight. Defensive capabilities will be imperative as well. https://lnkd.in/eKdmxkQM

  • On this historic 80th Anniversary of D-Day, please join in honoring the brave soldiers who stormed the beaches of Normandy and the paratroopers who descended behind enemy lines, forever changing the course of history. We are forever grateful for your bravery and sacrifice. #DDay #RememberandHonor

DDay 80th Anniversary 2024. I almost didn’t make this trip but so glad that I did. On the eve of this historic date I’m thinking through what was going on in everyone’s mind. The Pathfinders, Gliders and Paratroopers who would drop behind the beach landings to protect the flanks of those coming ashore, the Aircrews who would fly through ungodly flak, the crews of a some 5000 maritime fleet and everyone supporting and transporting the invasion force is just inspiring. Without a doubt the day was hard from the outset w paratroopers scattered or blown out to sea, aircraft shot down, hard fighting, and hard casualties across the board especially at Omaha and Point Du Hoc but at the end of the day the Allied Force was ashore and would only get stronger. It truly was an incredible generation. We all owe you a debt of gratitude. And we can still learn a lot from you. Thank you Scott Neil for making this happen.
