Our unique design history has acted as the backdrop for much bigger stories and moments — those of community, sustainability and passion — for four decades and counting. As we commemorate this milestone, we want to say thank you and celebrate with you, the individuals across the world who fill these venues with the emotion that gives them meaning. When Populous Associate Principal Alex Ward isn't designing stadiums, entertainment venues, or major transport hubs, he mentors students at his alma mater, helping the next generation of designers imagine the future of these engaging and often iconic spaces. To promote the QUT Engineering, Architecture and Built Environment Master of Architecture program, Alex spoke with QUT (Queensland University of Technology) Alumni Insights about his focus on performance-based sustainable architecture and its role in shaping the future of entertainment venue design. “Sustainability is a term that is thrown around loosely to cover a wider range of topics. Personally, I believe that efficient, performance-based design will reduce our embodied energy consumption during construction and limit the operational energy needs. Architecture needs a rigor of performance-based thinking and analysis to provide the most efficient and optimal built-form outcome our clients and planet deserve." #architecture #sustainability #sustainabledesign https://bit.ly/49Q1Koc

  • We are so honored to announce our founders received the Henry W. Bloch International Entrepreneurs of the Year award at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Entrepreneur of the Year Awards. Accepting this award on behalf of all our founders were Chris Carver, Lee Labinski (wife of the late Ron Labinski), Earl Santee, Joe Spear and Dennis Wellner. As Populous’ Americas Headquarters, Kansas City shaped our practice and cemented our legacy as the global leader in sports design and architecture. From the pioneering Truman Sports Complex, which redefined what multi-stadium venues could be, to the electrifying atmosphere of Children’s Mercy Park, Kansas City isn’t just where we work — it’s where we live the very ideas we design.

As one of the world’s foremost designers of Olympic stadiums, legacy building is a theme that Populous' Co-Managing Director APAC Paul Henry understands the benefits of better than almost anyone else. At the Australia-India Sport Innovation Summit hosted by the Centre for Australia-India Relations, Trade and Investment Queensland and Cricket Australia, Paul shared his experiences of the city shaping impact sports infrastructure can have, including how the Populous designed Narendra Modi Stadium has created a new home for cricket in India and is positioning Ahmedabad as a potential future host of the 2036 Olympics. Paul was joined on the panel by Brett Clark AM, Director - Brisbane 2032 Olympic & Paralympic Games; Robyn Smith OAM, CEO Sport Inclusion Australia; and Ben Oliver, Australia Executive General Manager, National Teams, who discussed with panel chair Suzanne Bosanquet the extraordinary opportunity that Brisbane 2032 provides for trade and investment for Queensland. 🏏 Find out more about Narendra Modi Stadium https://bit.ly/4gFlr44. #stadiumdesign

As the new Populous designed Kai Tak Stadium gets set to host the Rugby Sevens in March 2025, we’ve ensured that fans will bring the same level of excitement and camaraderie that was so synonymous with the former Hong Kong Stadium South Stand. The #SouthDeckTerrace offers an event platform that allows spectators to immerse themselves in the action. The Terrace was designed as a single tier to drive the crowd energy for the venue and be reminiscent of the famous South Stand atmosphere. The South Deck Terrace will provide that party-like atmosphere on an elevated platform with the large southern glass curtain reflecting the view of Victoria Harbour back to the stadium crowd and seamlessly connecting the venue to the city's vibrant landscape. The seating displays the Chinese characters "Kai Tak 啟德", celebrating the former airport site’s rich heritage. The innovative turf system is currently being installed to support top-level football and rugby, while also adapting for various sports and entertainment experiences. Our team is looking forward to joining you for the Rugby Sevens in March. #KaiTakSportsPark #KaiTakStadium #RaisingTheGame #stadium

  • True competitors bring their best to every rep, every practice and every game. As the NBA Cup heads to the semifinals, the league’s second-annual in-season tournament is bringing the Bucks, Hawks, Thunder and Rockets to Las Vegas for an unforgettable showdown. More than just a game, it’s a stage for elite performance and passion, where every play counts and only one team will emerge victorious. This celebration of competition will culminate in a winner-take-all championship game. No do-overs, no second chances — just the ball, the arena and the roar of the crowd. We’re thrilled to see this battle unfold in T-Mobile Arena, a venue designed for unforgettable moments and built to host the world’s greatest events. • Congratulations to Papua New Guinea on being granted an Australian National Rugby League licence. This gives the only country that claims rugby league as its national sport its own team, with the Populous designed PNG National Football Stadium the home ground of PNG's national rugby league team since 1975. With 3,000 permanent seats and 9,000 lightweight seats, and with an ultimate capacity of 25,000 permanent seats, the stadium has hosted a variety of events, including Rugby League World Cup matches. We can't wait to see the stadium and the team reach their full potential. The Pacific Rugby League Partnership will also support investment into grassroots pathways and elite rugby league across PNG, Tonga, Samoa and Fiji. 🏉 More about PNG National Football Stadium: https://bit.ly/3Dbes4C 🤝 More about the Pacific Rugby League Partnership: https://bit.ly/4iuaZya Australian Rugby League Commission #rugbyleague #nrl #nationalrugbyleague Photos courtesy Scott Burrows
