New research is out at the intersection of information economics and technology implementation in security/defense settings. In the first paper, forthcoming at Production and Operations Management, my collaborators (Sule Guney at UC Irvine, Jun Zhuang at UB, and Richard John at USC) and I utilize an incentivized experiment to study how adversaries respond when receiving information from a defender regarding the deployment of new security measures at targets of interest (e.g., airports, military bases, mass gatherings). Along with theoretical and behavioral advancements, our results provide important insights for counterterrorism management, including how different defensive disclosures can impact adversaries' beliefs and decisions: https://lnkd.in/gwVPWRME. In the second paper, forthcoming at Naval Research Logistics, Yusuf İhsan Tökel (PhD student at UB), Jun Zhuang, and I develop a signaling model in which a defender has private information about the capability of their new security technology, and must decide on the level of related technical detail to disclose. The attacker, upon receiving the defender's signal, updates their belief about the capability of the technology and subsequently decides whether to launch an attack. Based on the equilibrium conditions, we characterize and analyze four unique scenarios that partition the solution space based on relations between the defender's signaling costs: https://lnkd.in/g_xPnxgH.
