Discover Portrait Painting with the Zorn Palette using Plaza Artists’ Oils Thursday December 5 @ 1pm ET Join well-known oil painter, Gavin Glakas as he introduces us to the process of painting portraits with the Zorn Palette. Anders Zorn, a contemporary, friend, and competitor of John Singer Sargent, famously painted with only four colors: Yellow Ochre, Ivory Black, Vermillion (Red), and White. This is your chance to paint alongside and learn from master portrait artist, Gavin Glakas as he guides you through this streamlined and, in a large sense, easier way to paint. Less colors means fewer decisions, and students will be able to look at concepts like hue, value, and saturation of color more basically and easily without any distractions. This is a great way to get comfortable with color and learn to paint before adding new colors to your palette. Kristal will first introduce us to the basics by showing us how to “start” the markers, and how to properly store and care for them. We will also explore blending, layering, wet-on-wet, and dry-on-wet techniques to become more familiar with how the markers work. Mixed Media Illustration & Book Art Techniques with Faber-Castell Pencils & Pens Thursday October 17 @ 1pm ET Join Franz Spohn as he shows us how to use mixed media drawings to create a chapbook, an astonishingly easy, age-old, eight paged booklet, made from a single sheet of paper. First, Franz will guide us through an exploration of the materials – Faber-Castell’s Albrecht Durer Watercolor Pencils and Markers, Polychromos Colored Pencils, and Pitt Artist Pens on Legion Paper’s Somerset Book art paper. Some of the techniques we will explore include color blending/layering, using value and intensity of color, variety of approaches to using watercolor as a stand-alone element, as well as combinations of mixed media, and various ways to hold a pencil and varying pressures to attain desired effect. After experimenting with these materials, participants will fold and cut an additional piece of paper to create the chapbook structure and proceed to draw eight images on the paper to create the finished book.
