About us

The Philadelphia Orchestra and Ensemble Arts is boldly leading the way in building a bright, inclusive future for the performing arts—as the center of cultural life in Philadelphia, and as a model for the nation. With extraordinary artistic ambition and a commitment to reflecting the magic on stage in every interaction, we leave an indelible mark on audiences through the transformative power of the performing arts. This is where a universe of world-class art forms, genres, and ideas takes shape. With the GRAMMY-winning Philadelphia Orchestra and visionary Music and Artistic Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin as the centerpiece, we feature vibrant, multi-genre programming performed at the highest level, animating our stages—including the newly renamed Marian Anderson Hall—and attracting millions to our venues each year. Ensemble Arts Philly presents bold and innovative performances, bringing talented artists together with experiences as diverse as our region. Our three venues—the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the Academy of Music, and the Miller Theater—are vividly brought to life with the best of Broadway, comedy, theater, jazz, dance, and family presentations. As champions for music education and community engagement, we help to eliminate barriers to access and maximize impact while uniting, inspiring, and educating people of all ages and backgrounds. We transform the lives of more than 35,000 K-12 students each year through free arts education programs in music, dance, and theater. As a mission-based non-profit organization, at the heart of our work is the belief that the arts are for everyone. While fostering an environment where all feel welcome, we serve as a canvas for creativity, a platform for expression, and a sanctuary for inspiration.

  • After two weeks of concerts, community engagement activities, and diplomatic events highlighting the Orchestra’s role as a global cultural ambassador, The Philadelphia Orchestra’s 2024 Tour of China has concluded. Each moment of the tour powerfully demonstrated the unique ability of music to build bridges between people and cultures, and to model collaboration, kindness, and joy.  While in Beijing, Principal Guest Conductor Marin Alsop led the world premiere of Mason Bates’s setting of the Tang dynasty poem “Spring River Flowers by Moonlight,” which was performed alongside other settings of ancient Chinese lyrical texts from the iSing! International Festival’s Echoes of Tang Poems.  Between performances in Beijing, a wind ensemble of the Orchestra traveled to Philadelphia’s sister city Tianjin and performed a chamber concert led by Assistant Conductor Naomi Woo.  The Orchestra traveled to Chengdu for the first time and performed a side-by-side concert with members of the Chengdu Symphony. The Orchestra also performed a concert in the Phoenix Hill Sports Park that attracted over 5,000 in-person attendees and amassed over four million viewers through livestreams on WeChat and on Chunxi Road.  The final leg of the tour brought the Orchestra to Haikou, the capital of Hainan, an island province and the southernmost province in China. With this trip, The Philadelphia Orchestra became the first American orchestra to visit Hainan.  Between these highlights, musicians performed pop-up concerts at Beijing’s National Museum of China, the Chengdu Giant Panda Museum, the Chengdu Tianfu Art Museum, and the Cloudscape of Haikou Library, and with Hainan University’s Silk Road Ensemble. United States Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns hosted a welcome reception at Bush House—his official residence—and attended concerts in Beijing. Ambassador Burns echoed a sentiment that we share, that there is transformative power in musical dialogue.  We are grateful to our generous tour sponsors: Premiere Sponsor Hainan Airlines; Lead Sponsor Bank of China; and the Ford Foundation. Our tour partners: the United States Mission in China, the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in New York, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China, and the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. And additional tour support came from the City of Philadelphia and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau, Philadelphia International Airport, White and Williams, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. Mason Bates’s new work was co-commissioned by The Philadelphia Orchestra and Music and Artistic Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the China International Culture Association, with additional support from the US-China Cultural Institute, in memory of Shirley Young.

  • The final leg of the Orchestra’s tour of China brought everyone to Haikou, the capital of Hainan, an island province and the southernmost province in China. With this trip, The Philadelphia Orchestra becomes the first American orchestra to visit Hainan.       Each member of the tour party was welcomed with a lei. Orchestra leadership, Principal Guest Conductor Marin Alsop, Concertmaster David Kim, violist Renard Edwards, and violinist Davyd Booth were given bouquets upon arrival. Renard and Davyd have been recognized throughout the tour as participants in the historic 1973 Tour of China.     Thanks to the generous support of premiere sponsor Hainan Airlines, the Orchestra has traveled on a charter plane throughout the tour. This groundbreaking partnership enabled us to share the Philadelphia Sound with the people of China both efficiently and comfortably. We are incredibly grateful! 📸 Todd Rosenberg

  • The Orchestra is en route to China! Thanks to a sponsorship from Hainan Airlines, the tour party and cargo—including instruments, scores, luggage, and more—are traveling on a direct charter flight from Philadelphia to Beijing aboard a Boeing 787-9 aircraft provided by the airline. The aircraft will enable efficient travel to, from, and within China. Pubin Liang, General Manager of Hainan Airlines US Office, witnessed the historic take-off from Philadelphia International Airport last night. We are incredibly grateful for Hainan Airlines’s extraordinary support, which enables us to bring the Philadelphia Sound to China.
