Research spearheaded by ArtsFund President & CEO Michael Greer, completed in June 2024, includes data from 349 organizations across 28 counties and looks at funding composition and expense trends at cultural nonprofit organizations over 6 years. In white paper "What Do Expenses Look Like Today?" he explores possible levers for change and the positive impact of competitive wages as a means to create long-term strength in the sector. Our Southern Resident killer whales are some of the most iconic wildlife in our region. Sightings of the pods always surprise and delight, but SRKWs face growing challenges in our region. Learn more about our grantees studying how vessel traffic in our busy sound impacts orca movements and behaviors.
🐋The endangered Southern Resident killer whales of the Pacific Northwest face growing challenges — from declining salmon populations to the noise and disruption of maritime traffic. At the forefront of addressing these threats is Dr. Shima Abadi, an oceanographer at UW Bothell’s School of STEM, who, alongside her team, is leveraging Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) to monitor and protect these iconic marine mammals. Using fiber optic cables to track orca movements and behaviors, this pioneering research could transform marine conservation practices. Supported by a $1.5 million grant from the Paul G. Amazing work from SPUN | Society for the Protection of Underground Networks to decentralize science and build capacity for brilliant scientists working across the African continent.
Why decentralize science on fungi? 🔬 Africa is home to many of the most biodiverse regions on Earth. There is a clear opportunity for scientists in Africa to lead research into the continent’s underground ecosystems. But at present, scientists in Africa must send their samples of underground fungi out of the country or continent for DNA sequencing. We want to help support African scientists to keep samples of soil and fungi in their place of origin from start to finish. Scientists continue to sound the alarm for sharks and rays based on their extensive research. This new study finds overfishing has halved shark and ray populations since 1970.
