I would like to extend my gratitude to Olivier Cavailles for inviting me to speak at the DU Video Montpellier as a guest lecturer for the third consecutive year. It’s an honor to contribute to the development of the next generation of analysts in France, helping prepare them for the unique demands of elite sporting environments. During the session, two key challenges emerged as central themes:
1️⃣ Turning Data into Actionable Insights
While data plays a significant role in nearly all top-tier football clubs worldwide, the degree of its impact can vary widely. To illustrate this point, the students were tasked with an exercise using data. While many produced detailed and thoughtful work, much of it leaned towards descriptive analysis rather than delivering insights that could drive decision-making.
This isn’t to say the work lacked quality—on the contrary, their analysis reflected a great deal of effort and skill. However, it’s crucial to remember that in a football club, most tasks ultimately serve one of two goals: helping the team win more games or generating more revenue. Whether it’s recruiting better players, identifying opposition weaknesses, or optimizing team performance, analysts should always ask themselves:
❓ “How will my work positively influence the team?”
By framing their work through this lens, analysts can ensure their insights are not only robust but also impactful in the decision-making process.
2️⃣ Communicating Data in Sport
Effective communication is essential in every facet of life, but its importance is amplified in sport. Whether it’s a coach briefing players on a game plan or an analyst advising a sporting director on recruitment decisions, the clarity and precision of the message can be the difference between success and failure.
For example, when asked to present to a Sporting Director, some students submitted 30+ page reports. While these documents were undoubtedly thorough, most Sporting Directors I know wouldn’t read past the second page — and rightly so. Time is an incredibly scarce resource in football.
❓ To ensure effective communication, I always encourage analysts to focus on three key questions:
• Who is my audience?
• How am I delivering the message? (e.g., a written report versus an in-person presentation)
• What is the key takeaway I want them to remember?
Before the lecture, I had the privilege of visiting three exceptional Ligue 1 clubs in the south of France. When I asked them about the biggest challenges they face in using data effectively, the same two themes consistently surfaced: converting data into actionable insights and ensuring its clear communication.
