  • With just over a week until the launch of our brand-new independent referral service near Scotch Corner, Melsonby, it's time to introduce our highly skilled anaesthetist, head of ECC, internal medicine expert, and cardiologist, Dr. David Mackenzie. Dr David Mackenzie BSc(Hons) MA VetMB PhD CertVC CertAVP(SAM) CertAVP(ECC) PgCert(VPS) CertAVP(VA) MRCVS RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Emergency & Critical Care and Small Animal Internal Medicine David qualified from Cambridge in 2003 having already obtained a degree in Physiology and a PhD in Neuroscience. David became Principal Vet at Vets-Now Aberdeen in 2014 and subsequently gained his certificate in Emergency & Critical Care (ECC) and Veterinary Professional Studies. From 2014 – 2018, he divided his time between running the ECC service at Aberdeen, leading the referral service in Cardiology at Chestergates Referrals (as well as contributing to the Medicine Referral Service and seeing ECC cases) and provided a Medicine and Cardiology referral service at Albavet in Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy in Scotland. He also spent time at Lumbry Park Referrals as a medicine clinician during this time. David worked at Eastcott Referrals in Swindon from 2018 as Medicine referral clinician. In 2021, he moved to Moorview Referrals in Cramlington to be closer to home and family where he was Head of Hospital and Inpatient Services before subsequently working full time as Referral Clinician in ECC. During this time, David developed an increasing interest in anaesthesia, and gained his RCVS certificate in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia in 2024. David is interested in all areas of ECC, Medicine, Cardiology and Anaesthesia and loves combining his knowledge and experience in all three areas to provide the best holistic care for his patients. David was formerly the Programme Co-ordinator for the BSAVA postgraduate certificate in ECC, and is currently an examiner for the BSAVA certificate exams in ECC and Medicine, and an RCVS Assessor for Advanced Practitioner status in ECC. David grew up surrounded by border collies, but currently his pets include three children and a cat. He is particularly interested and committed to mental wellbeing and neurodiversity, and is a member of the Vetlife Neurodiversity Working Group. David lives in Scotland, and outside work his main passion is mountain biking and enjoying the great and beautiful expanse of the Scottish landscape. At home, he loves cooking and DIY, and is currently converting his own campervan to go on further travel and biking adventures. #penninereferrals #pennineveterinaryreferrals #veterinary #veterinarymedicine
