The issue of overcrowding in Emergency Departments is significant, and solutions seem scarce. Patients often endure long waits, whether they're awaiting an evaluation by a healthcare provider, discharge, or admission. The strategies mentioned in the article, devised by physicians and healthcare systems, are commendable. However, introducing trained patient advocates into the Emergency Department could further enhance patient flow, address patient inquiries and worries, and free up clinical staff to focus on essential medical tasks, thereby optimizing operations. This article sheds light on instances where patients are admitted under incorrect diagnoses, potentially for financial incentives. One notable instance I was involved in was an infant who was brought to the Emergency Department three times, with diagnoses ranging from the flu to gastritis. Despite these assessments, the mother's request for a chest X-ray was repeatedly declined by the children's hospital the patient was at. It took a call from me to senior management at the hospital for the X-ray to be approved, leading to the accurate diagnosis of pneumonia and the child's subsequent admission for appropriate treatment. Both cases underscore the invaluable role of a patient advocate. Such advocates can navigate complex healthcare situations, offering support not only to patients and caregivers but also to healthcare providers and hospitals. When patients are sick enough to require hospitalization part of their recovery is to feel safe. The fact that only 68% of patients feel "very safe" in hospitals is a travesty.
