I just finished reading this thought-provoking piece by Demmy Verbeke and Curtis Brundy on how "open investing" is changing the way libraries are allocating collection funds. They identify several approaches, one of which they call the "protective approach" in which a library sets aside part of its budget to be spent exclusively on initiatives that they see as innovative and equitable. One question this raises, of course, is how do librarians decide what is innovative and equitable--especially when they have limited funds to spend and at a time when there are so many new initiatives worthy of investment. On this, I'd encourage folks to read the recent case study, "Investing in Open Access at the University of Minnesota," in which Emma Molls, Sunshine Jacinda Carter, et al., eloquently lay out the practical, everyday challenges the team at Minnesota faces in making investment decisions. As they point out, they've found it particularly difficult to make those decisions when it comes to Open Access books. I'm sure that they are not alone. Surely, this is a solvable problem--especially considering how little is spent collectively on HSS monograph publishing compared to STEM journals.
📖 🌍 How Open Investing is Shaping the Future of Library Collections Exciting transformations are happening in academic libraries! In their recent Katina Magazine article, Demmy Verbeke and Curtis Brundy show how libraries are leading the charge toward a more equitable knowledge ecosystem through open investing. By shifting funds from traditional paywalls to open access publishing, libraries are increasing inclusivity, accessibility, and global knowledge sharing. This movement is about more than access—it's aligning with academic values and fostering equity for all users. From innovative models like Diamond OA to investments in open infrastructure and metadata, libraries are building a sustainable, open future. Learn how this seismic shift is reshaping scholarly communication and empowering libraries to prioritize what matters most. 📰 Read the full article at https://lnkd.in/dAb8KUM3 #KnowledgeSharing #OpenAccess #LibrariesTransform #KnowledgeEquity #AcademicPublishing #LibraryInvestments #OA #Libraries #Librarians #OER #Information #Investing #Funding

It was great to meet with Steve Fallon in our De Gruyter Brill Leiden office today to talk about Paradigm Publishing Services. I loved this quote about our community: "Our scholarly community, whether comprised of aggregators, publishers, librarians, or faculty, is overwhelmingly made-up of like-minded, mission-driven professionals who are dedicated to the betterment of the scholarly ecosystem."
