Design-empowered Nature. Nature-empowered Design.

About us

Envision a future of complete synergy between Nature and humanity, where human-made and Nature-grown become indistinguishable. OXMAN is a new kind of company fusing design, technology, and biology to invent multi-scale products and environments—allowing design to empower science and science to empower design. As activist designers, we call for a fundamental shift from human-centric design to Nature-centric design. Categorical delineations between climate change and global pandemics, loss of biodiversity and loss of empathy for one another give way to authoring systems that address manifold challenges. Through this shift, we open ourselves up to moving beyond mere maintenance of Nature toward its radical betterment.

Neri Oxman Believes in Fashion Reincarnation ELLE Magazine's Véronique Hyland and Neri Oxman recently discussed healing the broken industries of product, architecture, and molecular design, with a focus on a product's circular cycle. OXMAN's OZERO technology seeks to combat one of fashion's greatest waste problems: A shoe can take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade. “In the past, my grandmother would pass a piece of clothing to me, and I would pass it to my daughter. Here, you’re passing a shoe back to the soil. The soil creates a tree, the tree creates a chair, the chair creates another shoe, the shoe creates another tree, et cetera.” - Neri Oxman, CEO. Introducing the ALEF platform, a combination of technologies for polyculture research and engineering. Novel sensors decode the dynamic chemical signals released by bacteria, plants, and entire ecosystems. Each signal is a unique composition of biogenic volatile organic compounds (bVOCs), often carrying an associated smell. ALEF explores how the production of ingredients for foods, fragrances, and flavors can add to – rather than subtract from – native plant life, soil fertility, and bacterial composition. It is driven by the belief that molecular goods can be designed to revive ancient ecosystems and drive overall health in future ecosystems. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/ezPBJXEb

Lord Norman Foster, Guest Editor for DOMUS, and Neri Oxman held a conversation about the OXMAN lab in October's edition of DOMUS. Located in New York City, the 36,000-square-foot laboratory, designed in collaboration with Foster + Partners, is a one-of-a-kind facility. The lab integrates an architectural studio with a state-of-the-art workshop – one of the most advanced digital fabrication facilities in New York City – including a robotics shop that enables experimental work with large-scale collaborative robots, and a wet lab that meets Biosafety Level 2 standards, allowing the OXMAN team to develop biologically augmented digital fabrication technologies. Spread across two floors, OXMAN lab includes private meeting spaces, a library, an exhibition gallery, an open-concept kitchen, a garden terrace, and a nursery, with abundant indoor and outdoor spaces for reflection and discovery. The lab is equipped to accommodate the work of more than 133 designers, scientists, and engineers. Read more: https://lnkd.in/e-DHidsY

OXMAN is excited to unveil O°, a biomaterial, digital, and robotic technology platform that powers the production of biobased textiles and wearables that are 100% biodegradable when disposed of, made entirely with organic material and without petrochemicals or glues, and producing no microplastics. O° (pronounced “O-Zero”) removes the complexity inherent in conventional fabrication processes, enabling the creation of consumer products from one material, under one roof, with minimal human intervention — through a nearly zero-waste process. The first product to be created using O° platform is a collection of shoes made entirely of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), a class of organic material known for its versatility and biodegradability. We are excited to announce the launch of OXMAN, a design lab whose mission is to create and deliver nature-centric products and environments to its clients and the natural world. Bringing together computational design, robotics, materials science, green chemistry, biology, and ecosystem engineering, OXMAN’s work reinvents the industrial systems that dictate how we design and produce everyday things — from the foods we eat and the clothes we wear to the buildings we inhabit.   OXMAN operates on three scales of design: product design, architectural design, and molecular design. The lab and the projects that it undertakes – currently focusing on fashion, architecture, and scent design — are intertwined such that inventions made in one domain inform innovations in another. The lab creates fully integrated systems that unify design, materials, production, and decomposition, to create positive impacts across the lifecycle of products and buildings.
